The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 2 (Bristol Bay Westside Assistant Area Management Biologist) located in Dillingham! What you will be doing: The Fishery Biologist 2 is a member of the Division of Commercial Fisheries, Central Region in Bristol Bay. Under general supervision, this Fishery Biologist 2 assists in the management of herring and salmon commercial and subsistence fisheries. Oversees the operation of 3 tower camps, helps with aerial surveys, makes and communicates management decisions for the Nushagak and Togiak Districts. The Bristol Bay salmon fishery is a dynamic, challenging, and exciting fishery. Experience with that will be a great boost to any career. The salmon season is nonstop from early June until mid-August but the rest of the year is relatively quiet. The working conditions you can expect: The job is located in Dillingham, a small town (pop. 2,400) in southwest Alaska. The Dillingham Area does offer opportunities to explore wild Alaska. There is access to the Wood Tikchik state park and private land owned by Choggiung Ltd. With a land use permit, Choggiung generally allows use of its lands for subsistence and recreational activities such as hiking, camping, hunting, and gathering berries and plants. This position requires a valid Alaska Driver's license, use and possession of firearms and ammunition, extensive travel in small aircraft, and operation of outboard skiffs. A First Aid/CPR certificate may be obtained after becoming employed. Experience with patience and understanding to communicate with stakeholders as individuals and groups. Familiarity with the Alaska Board of Fisheries processes. Experience or eagerness with aerial surveys for salmon or herring.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management; AND One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist.
  • The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 1, Fish Culturist 1, Wildlife Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
  • Biennial CPR and First Aid certification.
