About The Position

The Fisheries Scientist IV is primarily responsible for the development and management of specific research, modeling, and implementation of fisheries harvest management in Zone 6 of the Columbia River and the Ceded tributaries of the Yakama Nation. This work involves reviewing, developing, and carrying out scopes of work for management actions being implemented pursuant to the Yakama Nation's goal of recovery of their historic fishing, hunting and food gathering of natural resources. The work includes planning and development of harvest modeling scenarios for all harvestable species in Zone 6 of the Columbia River and the Ceded tributaries of the Yakama Nation. The scientist leads the development of improved modeling for the harvest program to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of the fisheries harvest activities and processes necessary to perform the mission statement to support activities required by Yakama Nation.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Fisheries Biology or related field.
  • A minimum of five years' experience that demonstrates that the applicant acquired knowledge and understanding of one or more of the following: biological sciences, natural resource management, population ecology.
  • Must have thorough understanding of the life histories of the salmonid species native to the interior Columbia Basin.
  • Required to pass pre-employment background check.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Knowledge of Yakama Nation Treaty Rights and governmental policies related to fisheries management in Zone 6 of the Columbia River and Ceded tributaries of the Yakama Nation.
  • Knowledge of scientific principles, theories, and methodologies to develop solution to complex problems.
  • Knowledge of analysis regarding biology, fish and wildlife needs, regional fish and wildlife policies, and interactions between these policies, other tribes, and agencies.
  • Possess skill in effective oral communications and presentations.
  • Possess skill in scientific writing capabilities.
  • Ability to facilitate, process and negotiate to resolve challenges and/or conflicts regarding Yakama Nation Fisheries Harvest in Zone 6 of the Columbia River and Ceded tributaries of the Yakama Nation.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Possess a thorough understanding of the salmonid life histories within Zone 6 of the Columbia River and the watersheds of the Ceded areas where the Yakama Nation maintains co-management responsibilities.
  • Provide technical leadership to YN Technical staff and if needed, YN Policy, on policies and procedures related to the Fisheries Harvest Monitoring Program.
  • Serve as an expert representative for Yakama Nation in Endangered Species Act (ESA) consults with NOAA, USFWS, and other agencies providing technical analysis to support proposed actions associated with RME of Yakama Nation Harvest Monitoring in Zone 6 of the Columbia River and Ceded tributaries of the Yakama Nation and implementation of Biological Opinions and Biological Assessments.
  • Analyze Yakama Nation Programs, projects, activities, objectives, and goals to ensure conformance with regulatory and contractual requirements.
