This internship will not include housing here at the fish hatchery. The Yellowstone River Trout Hatchery is located in Big Timber, Montana which is 60 miles East of Bozeman, Montana and 81 miles West of Billings, Montana. The Yellowstone River Trout Hatchery is a brood facility that is responsible for producing Yellowstone cutthroat, Arctic grayling and Golden trout for distribution into various waters with the state of Montana. In 2026, we will be conducting wild spawning operations for Arctic grayling as well as stocking brood replacement into Sylvan Lake which is the wild brood source for the Golden trout we produce and stock. Additionally, we will be stocking Yellowstone cutthroat in a variety of Montana water throughout the summer and fall. Specific Job Information: Participate in the daily duties and activities at the Yellowstone River Trout Hatchery, to include outdoor raceway and indoor hatchery tasks. This internship will also include grounds and building maintenance among other hatchery related duties, such as fish stocking, raceway pressure washing, tree trimming, among other hatchery related tasks. Outdoor raceway tasks include but are not limited to bi-weekly raceway cleaning, feeding of fish, monthly fish sampling, inventory and thin fish as necessary as well as crowd, load and stock fish species in and around FWP Region 5. Indoor hatchery tasks, to include but are not limited to cleaning troughs every other day, feeding of fish, monthly fish sampling, inventory and thin fish as necessary as well as crowd, load and stock fish in and around FWP Region 5. Intern will gain hand on experience in a variety of Fish Culture techniques which will include handling fish eggs, fish fry and fingerlings and catchable sized fish. Grounds keeping and building maintenance to include but not limited to mowing, trimming, pulling and/or cutting trees and shrubs, ground clearing, and general upkeep of the hatchery facilities. Other duties may include data entry and analysis, assisting other hatcheries and fisheries crews on various projects to complete program objectives and vehicle/equipment maintenance and upkeep
