About The Position

Goodman Theatre seeks a staff First Hand to assist Drapers in all phases of costume construction, as assigned by the draper/project manager and Costume Shop Manager. This position requires advanced technical sewing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a professional costume shop environment.

Requirements

  • 2–3 years of professional costume shop experience required; prior experience as a First Hand preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of costume history, period garment construction, and materials such as fabrics, interfacings, closures, and notions.
  • Advanced hand and machine stitching skills with proficiency in operating commercial and industrial sewing machines.
  • Excellent garment construction and finishing techniques with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and meet production deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership and guidance to Stitchers in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support all stages of costume creation, including:
  • Assist Drapers with fittings, cutting, stitching, and preparing alterations and instructions.
  • Instruct stitchers in execution of builds and alterations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to quality standards.
  • Occasionally lead small teams in alterations or specialized projects.
  • Participate in daily maintenance of the costume shop, storage spaces, supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workspace.
