About The Position

Project FIND’s mission is to provide low- and moderate-income and homeless seniors with the services and support they need to enrich their lives and live independently. Today Project FIND operates three supportive housing residences that are home to about 600 people and four senior centers with over 3,000 members. Our members and residents range from the healthy and active to the frail and homebound to the homeless. For all these men and women, Project FIND is a critical resource, providing housing, meals, and programs that help individuals navigate the challenges of aging by encouraging community engagement and healthy living. Job Summary: The First Cook will facilitate daily meal preparation, food service needs and requirements, coordinate general kitchen maintenance; and provide task management for the second cook, kitchen aides, interns and volunteers on duty.

Requirements

  • Associates degree and two years of experience as a cook, preferably in a commercial setting (hospital, school, nursing home, etc.) or three years of experience as a cook in a similar setting or related field.
  • NYS DOHMH Food Protection Certification.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining a healthy and productive working environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the NYC food standards requirements as well as NYS DOHMH food safety guidelines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • AED/CPR certified.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and cooks appealing, nutritious and tasty meals daily, according to NYC Aging’s pre-planned menu.
  • Supervises food service and tray line service for congregate meal programs.
  • Provides primary oversight and delegates task management for Second Cook, Kitchen Aide, interns and volunteers on duty.
  • Collaboratively ensures and maintains a clean kitchen environment, according to the NYS Department of Mental Health and Hygiene (NYS DOH) and NYC Aging standards.
  • Prepares and delegates weekly cleaning and meal prep schedules for the kitchen staff/team.
  • Prepare and serve meals in accordance with the NYS DOH and Health and NYC Aging standards.
  • Collaborate with Program Director/Coordinator on special events which require special meal planning.
  • Responsible for coordinating receipt and storage of food orders and monitoring of kitchen deliveries.
  • Work cooperatively with the assigned food service manager to complete daily food used records, monthly inventory, and other food program related records as required.
  • Collaborate with the Food Service Manager, Director and membership toward the development of older adult center menu planning.
  • Work collaboratively with the Food Service Manager to ensure that equipment is clean and operational; report any malfunctioning equipment as needed.
  • Provide staff support/coverage at sister sites as needed.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager.
