About The Position

Responds to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or its equivalent GED
  • Must possess a Fire Fighter I certification
  • Certified as a National Registry EMT
  • Must have CPR training
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License and ability to attain Class B to operate Fire Apparatus within three (3) month's from hire date and be insurable
  • Must be able successfully pass a drug screening and criminal history background check
  • Modern fire service principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment
  • Fire protection systems, evacuation considerations, and building construction regulations for fire safety
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions using the English language
  • Ability to learn the geography of the District, the location of important buildings and the street system
  • Ability to learn the location of hydrants on the streets, standpipe connections and sprinkler system connections in buildings
  • Ability to participate in training drills
  • Attend school and classes on firefighting, hydraulics, first aid and emergency medicine, fire equipment, and apparatus, and other classes associated with recognized fire fighter and EMT standards
  • Ability to learn and apply technical information pertaining to firefighting
  • Ability to assist career staff in performing protective inspections of structures and businesses in the community for fire hazards and pre-incident surveys for tactical planning
  • Ability to analyze and cope with a variety of emergency situations calmly but effectively and to react quickly to secure accurate and precise information on the location, extent, and nature of fires and emergency aid requests
  • Ability to sustain heavy physical labor during periods of intense activity in emergency situations
  • Ability to work at varying heights above grade
  • Ability to work para-military ranking structure
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
  • Ability to service and operate equipment and apparatus
  • Ability to perform necessary maintenance, testing and care of fire hoses, trucks, ladders, and auxiliary equipment and apparatus
  • Ability to perform general maintenance and minor repairs to station facilities
  • Be able to attain Driver License (Class B to operate Fire Apparatus)
  • Work as needed, with little or no advance notice
  • Work during emergency events in adverse environments
  • Work in intense life-threatening conditions
  • Drive/work in inclement weather conditions
  • Be subjected to exposure of hazardous materials, dangerous persons, bodily fluids and noise
  • Running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping, twisting, bending, lifting and sitting for long periods of time
  • Work in an office environment
  • Sustained posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time
  • The employee is required to lift up to 75 pounds
  • A person in this position must be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the ability to perform the essential job functions
  • A person in this position must be able to pass written exam, a physical examination (including drug screen) performed by a physician

Responsibilities

  • Places equipment, lays and connects hose; operates high-capacity pumps and directs water streams;
  • Assess fires and situations and report conditions to superiors to receive instructions, using two-way radios;
  • Raises and climbs ladders, uses chemical extinguishers, safety belts, lines and hooks and uses self-contained breathing apparatus;
  • Enters burning buildings as part of a fire suppression team, perform ventilation tasks above ground, carry heavy objects and equipment and rescue injured or trapped victims;
  • Responds to request for pre-hospital emergency medical care to sick and/or injured;
  • Inspects, cleans and maintains equipment;
  • Assists with community outreach presentations on safety hazards;
  • Maintains fire station clean and orderly by completing maintenance schedules;
  • Other duties as required and assigned.
