About The Position

Performs all tasks associated with delivery of fire department services as well as daily operations of the fire department.

Prepares a variety of records and reports including training documents, emergency response documents both written and electronic, and other documentation as required by a supervisor.
Participates in the planning, development and implementation of department training programs.
Cooperates and coordinates with fire prevention as needed for fire inspections and public education activities.
Assists with preliminary determinations as to origin and cause of fire incidents for reporting purpose.

Requirements

• This position requires an above average working knowledge of computer operations in the areas of data entry, data manipulation, report and statistical generation and analyses.
• Maintain physical conditioning required to perform the normal physical activities associated with the delivery of fire protection, emergency medical services, rescue and other services deemed an appropriate function of the fire department.
• For purposes of evaluation of a firefighters fitness to perform essential physical job task the following listing, though not inclusive, should be considered as representative of job specific activities.
• Firefighters are subject to unpredictable interruption of sleep periods during which they must function effectively, including directing the work of others in emergency situations.
• While performing many emergency-related duties, a Firefighter is required to lift , carry and/or drag objects such as hose line or smoke ejector weighing up to 80 pounds, wear special protective clothing weighing up to 100 pounds, and wear a self-contained breathing apparatus weighing up to 80pounds for short or long distances and often in combination.
• While performing emergency aid, a Firefighter may lift and carry victims weighing up to 160 pounds, which requires use of the stomach and lower back muscles to support the body.
• Firefighters are exposed to a variety of weather conditions and are required to tolerate very hot and very cold temperatures. When responding to emergencies, incumbents also are exposed to other elements, including smoke, heat, flames, hazardous chemicals, and blood and other bodily fluids, In these situations, they must be able to observe or monitor people or objects to ensure compliance with safety standards; stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time, unable to rest at will; use explosive strength, as sprinting or jumping; walk over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; use arms above shoulder level; bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; and use common hand tools, such as hammers, saws and screw drivers.
• Firefighters are required to have the ability to hear a variety of warning devices and alarms, gas leaks, and/or calls for help.
• Some rescue duties require the operation of mechanical rescue equipment and the monitoring of proper safety techniques in the use of such equipment. The tools used by a Firefighter require precise arm-hand positioning and movements, such as when operating a chain saw or using emergency medical rescue equipment. The operation of firefighting equipment often requires the coordinated movement of more that one limb simultaneously.
• Emergency situations may require incumbents to work in small, cramped crawl spaces, areas where vision is limited, and/or at heights, including on roof tops and/or ladders.
• Firefighters must be able to distinguish among colors, including colors of smoke and flame, color coded equipment, hazardous materials identification placards, and wires in order to identify or respond to potentially dangerous situations.
• Meet or exceed minimum qualifications employment as defined by Springdale Civil Service Commission and maintain those qualifications throughout tenure as a firefighter.
• Possess and maintain a driver’s license valid for the operation of all fire department vehicles. Possess, or obtain and maintain, all certifications deemed necessary, by the Fire Chief, to provide current and future service provided by the fire department.
• KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles, practices, methods and techniques of modern fire fighting and protection of lives and property; rules, regulations and operational procedures of the fire department and the City in general; emergency medical care at the paramedic level; local geography, including location of water mains and hydrants and the major fire and/or life safety hazards of the City; firefighting equipment and apparatus functions and repair techniques.
• ABILITY TO: Make effective use of personnel, equipment and apparatus in emergency situations.
• Operate apparatus and equipment used in modern firefighting and emergency medical response activities.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, with individuals and in group settings.
• Establish and maintain cordial, cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work under both regular business and adverse conditions.
• Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
