About The Position

This position is responsible for the supervision of firefighting crews assigned to a shift.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
  • Each employee must complete the requirements as set forth by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council as a Georgia Certified Firefighter . ( Required )
  • NPQ Firefighter II ( Required )
  • NPQ Fire Officer I (within 12 months)
  • Successful completion of National Incident Management Systems 100, 200, 700, and 800 (Required)
  • Minimum of 3 years paid experience in a career department. (Required)

Responsibilities

  • Supervises firefighting personnel and activities of an assigned station during an assigned shift; assume command responsibilities at fire suppression, emergency medical and rescue incidents until relieved by a superior officer.
  • Responds to fire alarms, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, rescue calls, and other emergencies as a supervisor of a fire and rescue team.
  • Participates in identifying opportunities for improving fire suppression methods and procedures; identify resource needs; review with appropriate management staff implement improvements.
  • Assigns work activities and projects as needed including but not limited to equipment maintenance, hydrant maintenance, uniform and PPE supplies, fire hose maintenance, hydrant maintenance and testing, and pre-incident planning.
  • Assumes command of fire suppression efforts in the absence of the superior officers including directing fire streams to protect exposures; drive and operate various equipment and apparatus as needed; confine and extinguish fire incorporating proper fire and safety procedures at all times.
  • Coordinates and participates in the maintenance of building, station grounds, equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist with the planning and conducts fire safety programs for schools, church, and civic organizations and other community groups.
  • Assists in training, motivating and evaluating assigned personnel; work with subordinate personnel to correct deficiencies.
  • Performs fire suppression, rescue, and First Responder duties in response to emergency calls.
  • Manages, reviews, and verifies accuracy of all records, incident reports and correspondence to the Fire Chief.
  • May be required to perform as a Hazmat Technician
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
