About The Position

Our Fire Safety Technicians ensure that every campus facility meets the highest standards of fire protection and life-safety. Through inspections, system maintenance, hazard identification, and code compliance work, they help create a safer environment for the entire community. Fire Safety Technician I, under direct supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled duties required for inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of fire safety equipment, utilizing plans for proper conformance with fire safety equipment codes and inspecting facilities to determine additional needs. Fire Safety Technician II, under general supervision, conducts inspections, tests, and consultations to ensure compliance with good safety practices and standards (IFC, IBC, NFPA, Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Laws) applicable to all buildings and facilities, discovers and recommends remedies for safety hazards, and installs, maintains, calibrates, and repairs life safety control systems in relation to fire alarm and protection. Fire Safety Technician III, also under general supervision, conducts inspections, tests, and consultations to ensure compliance with good safety practices and Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Laws, discovers and recommends remedies for safety hazards, oversees and coordinates the preparation and review of engineering drawings, justifications, and estimates for accuracy and utility, modifies and maintains complex life safety equipment, and provides functional supervision over support staff including other Technicians.

Requirements

  • Fire Safety Technician I: High school graduation or equivalent
  • Fire Safety Technician I: Two years of post-high school training in the basic skills of fire prevention or any combination of training and experience in fire prevention work from which comparable knowledge and ability is acquired, or certified as a Fire Inspector 1 or NICET Certification Level 1 in a Fire Alarm/Protection System
  • Fire Safety Technician I: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Fire Safety Technician II: Two years of experience in electrical or control trade, including apprenticeship; or two years related experience, which includes regular participation in activities such as project planning, designing, ensuring code compliance, estimating project costs, investigating problems, recommending actions; or an equivalent combination of training and experience totaling four years
  • Fire Safety Technician II: Certified as NICET II in Fire Alarm Systems or NICET 1 in Water Based Fire Protection or NICET 1 in Special Hazards
  • Fire Safety Technician II: Must possess and maintain NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certificates
  • Fire Safety Technician II: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Fire Safety Technician III: Five years of related experience, which includes regular participation in activities such as project planning, designing, ensuring code compliance, estimating project costs, investigating problems, recommending actions or similar tasks
  • Fire Safety Technician III: Appropriate certifications in specialized field including NICET (sprinkler/alarm)
  • Fire Safety Technician III: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that every campus facility meets the highest standards of fire protection and life-safety
  • Perform inspections, system maintenance, hazard identification, and code compliance work
  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled duties required for inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of fire safety equipment (Technician I)
  • Utilize plans for proper conformance with fire safety equipment codes (Technician I)
  • Inspect facilities to determine additional needs for fire safety equipment (Technician I)
  • Conduct inspections, tests and consultations necessary to ensure compliance with good safety practices and with the standards imposed under IFC and IBC, NFPA, Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Laws applicable to all buildings and facilities (Technician II & III)
  • Discover and recommend the remedies for safety hazards in buildings and facilities (Technician II & III)
  • Install, maintain, calibrate and repair life safety control systems in relation to fire alarm and protection (Technician II)
  • Oversee and coordinate the preparation and review of engineering drawings, justifications, and estimates for accuracy and utility (Technician III)
  • Modify and maintain complex life safety equipment (Technician III)
  • Provide functional supervision over support staff including other Technicians (Technician III)
