About The Position

The Fire Safety Compliance Officer (FSCO) is a leadership position responsible for ensuring adherence to fire safety procedures and protocols across assigned hull or area operations. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), this position reports to the Fire Safety Compliance Manager (FSCM) and serves as a key member of the assigned Hull/Area Management Team. The FSCO enforces safety compliance, conducts audits, and acts as a resource to train and educate mechanics on safe work practices while supporting production goals.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED
  • Experience with BIW or related industry – 5 Years
  • Basic computer skills with MS Word and database management
  • Ability to obtain a Security Clearance
  • Strong interpersonal skills for professional communication with all levels
  • Demonstrated ability to enforce procedures and maintain compliance
  • Knowledge of shipbuilding operations and fire safety protocols
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities

Nice To Haves

  • FEMA ICS 100/200 Training/Certification preferred
  • Fire watch and fire extinguisher training preferred
  • Prior Supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience with audit procedures and root cause analysis preferred

Responsibilities

  • Maintain expert knowledge in Hot Work, PPE, 5 Safety Absolutes, and other Safety Procedures
  • Perform Hot Work Audits, maintain Hot Work Control Board, and maintain audit database
  • Report procedural non-compliances to CAs and Management for disciplinary action when appropriate
  • Enforce all procedures and hold the management team accountable for compliance
  • Provide oversight of fire extinguishers to ensure current inspections and proper placement
  • Recommend procedure changes or process improvements to management
  • Serve as SAZ Audit Coordinator for Hull/Area
  • Perform audits and upload weekly SAZ Audits into database
  • Perform A3 Root Cause Evaluations as needed to resolve safety issues and negative trends
  • Submit weekly activity reports including hot work and safety metrics to Hull/Area Management, Fire Safety Compliance Manager, and Directors
  • Coordinate hot work with the Safety Lab (if assigned to hull in water)
  • Attend morning meetings, Safe Site Walks and perform Audits and Projects as assigned
  • Serve as member of Hull/Area Safety Action Team (SAT) with weekly meetings
  • Participate in Bi-Weekly Area Safety Committee (ASC) meetings
  • Attend trade musters to communicate hot work and safety issues
  • Attend Muster 3 with Hull/Area management team
  • Attend Weekly FSCO meetings
  • Provide backup FSCO coverage for other Hulls/Areas as needed
  • Maintain professional interpersonal communication with mechanics, peer group, management team, and customer
  • Maintain a presence on the deck plate to train, educate, and assist mechanics to work safely
  • Help remove roadblocks to achieve weekly production goals
  • Perform additional assigned duties due to reduced volume of hot work, which may include serving as Front Line Supervisor, Rapid Coordinator, and/or Trial Card Coordinator (if assigned to hull in water)
