Job Description: The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals. Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed. Reviews construction plans, site plans, fire suppression system plans, fire alarm plans, and other fire code required plans for permits for new and existing commercial, public, and residential buildings. Reviews occupancies in the unincorporated areas of the county for inspection and compliance with the currently adopted fire code. Supports, collaborates and assists with code enforcement, inspections, and plan reviews for the codes currently adopted by Bell County and any applicable state laws. Investigates fires and arsons according to procedures/requirements as set out in Subchapter B of Chapter 352, Local Government Code and any appropriate county-adopted codes. Assists the Bell County Health District on the enforcement of state and county health and safety code matters. Enforces state laws addressing inspections of nursing homes, day-care facilities and certain other businesses in relations to fire prevention where applicable in Bell County. Coordinates with the County Purchasing Director and County Auditor to process requisitions, process purchase orders, track invoices, prepare annual budgets, process budget amendments, and recommend payment for supplies, materials, and services required. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Requires Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, Fire Prevention and Education, Emergency Management or related field supplemented by six (6) years of fire service, fire inspection, or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Requires TCOLE certified peace office (Advanced).
  • Certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection as Basic Fire Investigator.
  • Certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection as Fire Inspector II.
  • Certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
