About The Position

Under general supervision from the Fire Marshal or Deputy Fire Marshal, inspects business, industrial, and other public buildings/facilities in the City of Logan for compliance with the applicable fire codes, standards, ordinances, rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • High School GED or equivalent AND experience equivalent to two (2) years full-time fire service, building/construction inspection, or closely related work.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within one (1) year, a Fire Inspector I Certification from the State of Utah Fire and Rescue Academy, and/or ICC.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within one (1) year, a Fire Investigator I certification from the State of Utah Fire and Rescue Academy or other approved organization.
  • Must have a valid Utah Operator's License.
  • Must be able to lift over 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to get in in and out of vehicles repeatedly.
  • Residential Living Requirement Must live within the Logan City Residential Living Requirement as outlined within Ordinance 24-24; SECTION 1: 2.19.010 of the Logan Municipal Code: Residency Requirements. Fire Department members who utilize city vehicles are to reside no further than thirty (30) miles from the Logan City office building located at 190 N 100 W, Logan, UT.
  • Knowledge of City, State, and Federal Building, Fire, and Hazardous Materials Storage codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of fire inspection principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the street names and locations in the City of Logan and all other coverage areas.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with business owners/managers, other staff, and the public.
  • Skill in following complex oral and written instructions, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Skill in communicating using standard telephone and two-way radio equipment.?
  • Skill in preparing and conducting training programs for employees and the public.
  • Skill in understanding and interpreting complex codes, ordinances, rules, regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Skill in inspecting commercial/public facilities to identify Building, Fire, and Hazardous Materials Storage code, ordinance, or regulation violations.
  • Skill in reviewing plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure their compliance with Building, Fire, and Hazardous Materials Storage codes, ordinances, and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs fire safety inspections of businesses, manufacturing/industrial facilities, schools, and other commercial/public facilities to identify fire hazards, potential/actual fire code violations, and to verify locations of hazardous materials
  • Talks with school groups and other City residents to explain fire safety/fire prevention practices and techniques and inform them about the functions of the Logan Fire Department.
  • May be required to conduct classes and/or provide instruction on fire prevention, fire safety, fire protection systems, and other fire related topics.
  • Reviews plans, drawings, and specifications for new commercial construction or modifications/additions to existing commercial buildings/facilities to ensure that they comply with all applicable City, State, and Federal building, fire, and Hazardous Materials Storage codes, ordinances, and regulations
  • Explains to owners/contractors the changes needed to comply with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations
  • Inspects fire protection systems and fire alarm systems to ensure proper installation/operation.
  • Assists with investigating fires and coordinating the activities of fire investigations.
  • Regularly participates in creating and updating pre-incident fire plans as part of the routine building inspection program and as otherwise needed or required .
