Our Guiding Principles Making an IMPACT for the customer: Inclusive Motivated Proactive Accountable Customer-Focused Teamwork The Division of the State Fire Marshal keeps Ohioans safe when they are at home, and out and about. This includes modernizing and enforcing the Ohio Fire Code; training and certifying firefighters; teaching fire prevention and safety education to businesses, industry, schools and the public; investigating the origin and cause of fires and explosions; and regulating and licensing fireworks companies, underground storage tanks and other fire-related industries. Assists the State Fire Marshall & the Director of Commerce in defining agency goals & objectives by planning, developing, directing & coordinating all activities of the Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau.

Requirements

  • Current OPOTA Peace Officer Certification
  • 9 yrs. exp. in fire service or law enforcement which includes 5 yrs. exp. in management/supervision at the chief officer command level dealing with fire, explosion /or bombing investigation, arson investigation, or criminal investigation.
  • Or 2 yrs. exp. as FEIB Investigator Supervisor, 26535; current OPOTA Peace Officer certification.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
  • The State of Ohio is a drug-free Workplace which prohibits the use of marijuana (recreational marijuana/non-medical cannabis).
  • All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment.
  • This position is also subject to Federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) regulations that prohibit someone to carry, transport, or otherwise possess firearm(s) and/or ammunition from consuming marijuana, including medical marijuana.
  • Medical marijuana is prohibited as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test for final applicants in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Directs investigators and supervisors in the investigation of fire and explosions to ensure compliance with applicable laws and standards.
  • Ensures investigations are conducted thoroughly, objectively, and in accordance with recognized national standards and forensic science practices (e.g., NFPA 921, 1033, and 1321.)
  • Directs the day-to-day administrative functions of the Bureau, including all personnel and fiscal issues. Plans, develop and coordinates training, records, technical review, reporting and certification standards for bureau operations.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate fire investigators, office and support staff.
  • Develop and manage the bureau budget, including equipment, vehicles, and training.
  • Must have the ability to make sound decisions, communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Represents State Fire Marshal & Director at conferences, meetings & seminars, boards, committees and taskforces as directed. Responsible for public relation activities.
