About The Position

Supervises and directs all phases of emergency and non-emergency operations for assigned fire company. Command a fire company in executing fire suppression and fire prevention activities, rescue operations and emergency medical operations to protect and safeguard lives and property. Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire stations and equipment. Assumes and maintains the role of incident commander when first company at scene, until officially relieved. Regularly assigns and checks the work of others. Provides direction and guidance and maintains the flow of work. No budgetary responsibilities. Integral to the position of Captain is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting, and, if necessary, disciplining.

Requirements

  • Skills in performing mechanical and physical tasks.
  • Skills in interpersonal communications.
  • Ability to supervise work of others and a thorough understanding of leadership principles.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior; hydraulic principles; fire suppression tactics; and department rules, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of City geography, principles of building construction, and basic first aid and life support.
  • Knowledge of reporting and record keeping systems.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to operate heavy duty fire apparatus under emergency conditions.
  • Must have the ability to react quickly and effectively, understand and follow oral and written instructions, operate a motor vehicle and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Must be able to cope with stressful situations and coordinate fire ground activities of several fire companies.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Minimum of six years' experience in fire services and three years of qualifying time as a Driver/Engineer required.
  • Must meet "Qualifying Standards" as specified in Article 22 of Working Agreement with Local 77.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
  • Any job offer made by the City is contingent upon the applicant passing the drug screening and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Accepts responsibility to supervise and direct additional fire companies and command an incident scene.
  • Performs first aid, CPR, automatic defibrillation, and medical assistance tasks as required.
  • Supervises and performs all phases of fire suppression duties, including laying hose lines, operating nozzles and master-stream devices, raising and climbing ladders, ventilation work, and salvage and overhaul operations.
  • Supervises and performs extrication and rescue operations to remove trapped victims from hazardous or life-threatening situations.
  • Participates in and conducts numerous types of training activities covering all phases of Department operations, including attendance at state and regional fire schools and seminars.
  • Participates in fire prevention activities by making fire prevention and fire safety inspections of schools, churches, hospitals, and other public and private business, commercial, and industrial facilities for fire hazards and fire code violations.
  • Performs first responder duties for hazardous material calls.
  • Cleans and performs routine maintenance on fire stations and grounds, apparatus, equipment, and tools.
  • Maintains detailed daily records, and prepares reports of company activities including emergency responses, training, and inspections.
  • Assists City Departments and citizens as necessary.
  • Evaluates performance of subordinate personnel.
  • Participates in public fire safety education and public relations programs including tours at schools and in fire stations.
  • Performs duties at higher positions as needed.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
