About The Position

Sandy Pine is a multigenerational, family-owned farming operation based in Nebraska. We specialize in producing the highest quality pigs for our customers around the country and transport them all over the world. We are made up of multiple farm locations, all strategically located to provide our pigs with the safest and healthiest environment. Because of this commitment to excellence, we provide the highest quality swine genetics in the industry. This position is located in Atkinson, Nebraska. Job Summary: The position is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of a high health sow finishing barn, including overseeing the final, critical grow-out phase of pigs to optimize animal health, weight gain, and biosecurity. This includes training, developing, and coaching of employees daily to ensure consistent implementation of best practices that drive productivity, optimize efficiency, promote sustainability, and safeguard the well-being of the animals.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • 18 years or older.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • 1+ years of related experience and/or training in swine finishing and/or production management required.
  • Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Ability and desire to care for pigs in all stages of the finishing cycle of production.
  • Ability to manage time and priorities in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Display a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work successfully with limited supervision.
  • Ability to recognize problems before they occur and take a proactive approach to resolve the issue.
  • Possess excellent problem-solving, leadership, and project management skills.

  • Ability to work around large animals, which can cause injury if handled improperly.
  • Ability to stand and walk on concreate floors for up to 9+ hours per day, with the ability to assist in moving deceased animals that might weigh upwards of 500 pounds.
  • Ability to work with moving mechanical parts and vibration while wearing required personal protective equipment and adhering to all safety standards.
  • Flexibility to work on rotating weekends (Saturday and Sunday) to provide greater oversight and leadership is required.
  • Ability to perform the required functions of the job, including physical demands like pushing heavy feed carts up to 600 feet, handle (move by pushing or herding) adult pigs weighing over 500 pounds, kneel and bend at the waist for long periods of time, climb over 4-foot pens, climb feed bins maintaining 3 points of contact for safety purposes at all times, operate high power washing equipment utilizing proper safety goggles, safety trigger release mechanisms, and waterproof protective clothing and footwear.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, not required.
  • 2 or 4-year degree within an agriculture-based major is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote team excellence in final, critical grow-out phase of pigs to optimize animal health, weight gain, and biosecurity. Includes planning, scheduling, execution of standard work, operational efficiency, and driving results, while understanding the company vision to successfully manage change on the farm to support innovation and drive continuous improvement.
  • Oversee standard operating and biosecurity protocols, following all farm-level and company standards in pig care practices to maintain health and well-being of all animals.
  • Maintain focus on fiduciary responsibility to reduce controllable costs, including labor resources to enforce employee efficiency.
  • Enforce bio-security standards and herd health policies of all employees, which includes mandatory showering and changing into farm clothes prior to entering the farm, having no contact with other swine, and adhering to down-time requirements as established by PIC (Pig Improvement Company).
  • Manage the finishing facility to ensure overall herd health and safety are followed by all employees with a dedication to swine production.
  • Ensure humane treatment of animals, overseeing all aspects of daily care, feeding, watering, health screening, administration of medication and vaccinations, proper working conditions of ventilation system, cleaning, and movement of animals throughout barn, proper documentation of animal records and timely removal of deceased animals.
  • Ensure employees are utilizing system tools to maintain accurate records while fostering a culture of lean continuous improvement and efficiency in all operations.
  • Actively partner and communicate with other farm managers and veterinarians regarding the health of the herd, ensuring strict compliance to biosecurity protocols.
  • Promote safe work habits and a safe working environment, ensuring all work-related injuries are properly reported, documented, and reduced through proper training and safety procedure enforcement.
  • Provide development opportunities for employees on the farm and offer guidance to employees to reach their personal and professional goals.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards of the farm, holding employees accountable for the care and cleanliness of work site.
  • Implement best practices for environment stewardship.
  • Enforce formal performance management practices to drive performance, reinforce positives behaviors and enhance production of team.
  • Partner with Human Resources for hiring, staffing, discipline, and terminations.
  • Perform other duties as determined by senior leadership in the care and support of animals and farm employees.
  • Be properly trained and certified to operate equipment and vehicles (rented or owned) according to the operator's manual and OSHA standards if applicable.
  • Check and maintain all fluid levels according to the operator's manual, prior to starting vehicles (trucks, tractors, skid steers, UTV side-by-side, etc.).
  • Use only the recommended types of fluids listed in the operator's manual.
  • Grease tractors, loaders, skid steers, manure spreader, construction equipment, pay loaders, disk, etc. according to the operator’s manual prior to operation.
  • Allow trucks, tractors, skid steers, pay loaders, construction equipment, or any machinery with an engine and fluid levels to warm up all fluid levels including hydraulic oil prior to operation.
  • Understand that warranty work can be denied if non-recommended fluids are utilized, or not maintained to the proper level, and not greased.
