About The Position

The primary focus of a Financial Aid Counselor is to provide a significant level of advising to students and parents regarding the financial aid application, awarding, and disbursement process. This position also handles the verification process from start to finish, works with Satisfactory Academic Progress, and financial aid appeals. Full position description is available upon request. The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Services is committed to ensuring the fair and equitable distribution of financial resources to provide access and to encourage the enrollment and retention of a well-prepared, high-achieving, and diverse student body. We believe that by providing exceptional guidance and advocacy for our constituents, we offer tools to help develop independent problem-solving skills, leading to enhanced student success which advances the University's mission. Our professional staff provides personalized counseling and outreach to educate and empower all students to make higher education more accessible and to reach graduation. The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Services plays an integral part in student recruitment and retention efforts and educating our students on financial awareness topics which helps support the University’s mission by preparing our students for a diverse and inclusive world. The office is under the umbrella of the University Communications and Marketing division at UW-Stevens Point.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three or more years’ experience working in student services
  • Commitment to exemplary customer service
  • Demonstrated administrative skills including attention to detail and an ability to manage multiple priorities to meet established goals and objectives
  • High-quality verbal and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years experience in financial aid, particularly with verification
  • Experience with PeopleSoft
  • Working proficiency level in the knowledge of Title IV regulations governing federal student aid
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

Responsibilities

  • Awards financial aid to qualifying students
  • Triages processes or applications if issues arise
  • Assists in collecting, preparing, and analyzing financial aid data for stakeholders
  • Serves as a point of contact to third party stakeholders about financial aid information and processes
  • Audits financial aid applications for awarding financial aid to qualifying students according to established policies and in compliance with federal and state regulations
