Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (CPA, MBA preferred).
  • 5–8 years of progressive finance/accounting experience, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Proficiency in legal accounting systems (e.g., Aderant, Elite, Clio, ProLaw).
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, trust accounting rules, and legal billing practices.
  • Excellent Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and analytical abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with e-billing portals and LEDES format
  • Knowledge of financial compliance specific to law firms (e.g., ABA Model Rules, IOLTA)
  • Familiarity with partner compensation models and capital contributions
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced legal environment

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit/loss, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Monitor firm-wide financial performance and provide variance analysis against budget and forecast.
  • Manage monthly and year-end closings, reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Lead the development and management of the firm’s annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Work with department heads and practice group leaders to support budgeting and cost control.
  • Supervise billing team and ensure timely and accurate invoice generation.
  • Monitor accounts receivable, aging reports, and collections activities.
  • Address complex billing issues or client-specific invoicing requirements (e.g., LEDES billing, e-billing platforms).
  • Oversee client trust accounts in compliance with IOLTA and bar association rules.
  • Ensure segregation of client funds and accurate reconciliation of trust accounts.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and support regulatory filings and audits.
  • Supervise finance staff (accountants, billing specialists, A/P, A/R clerks).
  • Develop and implement finance policies, internal controls, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with HR on payroll, partner compensation, and benefits-related financial matters.
  • Support leadership with financial modeling, pricing strategies, and profitability analysis by practice area or matter.
  • Provide financial insight for firm initiatives such as office expansion, technology investment, or lateral partner acquisition.
