Purpose The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing the financial functions and staff within the department, in addition to handling complex financial and operational tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline, and a minimum of six years of increasingly responsible accounting experience.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience with a demonstrated track record of effectively leading, managing, and developing staff.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
  • Ability to think strategically, work collaboratively, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in higher education or state agency environment. Demonstrated knowledge with commonly used business applications at the University of Texas at Austin. Working knowledge of UT-Austin accounting policies and practices, including purchasing and vouchering rules, guidelines and procedures. Prior experience monitoring budgets and identifying issues. Experience with creating dashboards and visual reports.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Supervise accounting and grants administrative staff and student workers, providing guidance and oversight to ensure efficient operations.
  • Providing ongoing coaching and training opportunities to support staff growth.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment that encourages problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Financial Management Oversight: Advise accounting team regarding financial questions regarding allowability and/or source of funds. Review and approve transactions, including corrections by administrative teams in their areas of responsibilities. Approve transaction processes and corrections submitted by administrative teams.
  • Assists with review of monthly and fiscal-year transactions.
  • Monitor stopgap accounts, process costing corrections, and initiate funding transfers.
  • Serve as a backup document creator and processor for office-related actions.
  • Ensure financial transactions comply with university policies and applicable regulations.
  • Budget and Compliance Oversight: Serve as the financial point of contact for office budgets and accounts.
  • Oversee compliance activities, including balance reviews, budget preparation, and scholarship processing.
  • Assist the Director with instructional budget planning.
  • Process Improvement: Lead initiatives to document and enhance financial workflows within the department.
  • Develop and implement training plans for new processes and policy changes.
