About The Position

Within the framework of The Settlement Home for Children's mission, the Finance Director will assume a strategic role in the overall management of the organization. The Finance Director will have the primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing, and controlling all financial-related activities of the organization and will provide supervision and support to the accounting department.

Requirements

  • Nonprofit Accounting Principles: Deep understanding of GAAP, specifically fund accounting, net asset classification, and grant management
  • Compliance & Regulations: Expertise in IRS regulations (Form 990), state charity regulations, and federal OMB Uniform Guidance for grant compliance
  • Financial Software: Proficient in QuickBooks Online; experience with Ramp expense management system and ADP Workforce Now; BambooHR experience preferred
  • Strategic Financial Planning: Ability to create long-term financial plans, forecasts, and models that align with the organization's mission
  • Budgeting & Cash Flow Management: Experience in complex budget development and monitoring liquidity to ensure financial sustainability
  • Financial Analysis & Reporting: Ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for the Board of Directors and executive leadership
  • Risk Management: Skilled in identifying and mitigating financial risks
  • Leadership & Communication: Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including board members, staff, donors, and auditors
  • Strategic Decision Making: Capacity to balance financial discipline with mission-driven objectives
  • Cultural Competence: Sensitivity to the communities served
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years in financial management, ideally with experience in a senior role at a similar-sized nonprofit
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must meet personnel requirements as outlined by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) Minimum Standards
  • Valid driver's license with less than 2 moving violations and/or 1 accident within the past 3 years
  • Must have and maintain current auto liability insurance
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug testing

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CMA certificate highly preferred
  • Master's degree or higher in Accounting or a related field from an accredited university
  • 10+ years of experience in financial management
  • Accounting experience in a nonprofit organization
  • Experience working with a board of directors

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for financial management, administration, and compliance in accordance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, audit requirements, and best practices for nonprofit accountability
  • Serves as primary liaison for Executive Team fiscal reporting and facilitation
  • Manages cash flow and forecasting; provides direction and oversight for all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting
  • Maintains relationships with key organization partners, including auditors, banking institutions, and insurance and investment partners
  • Reviews, manages, and establishes as needed new internal systems and controls, operations, processes, and financial procedures to ensure the integrity of financial information and reporting
  • Serves as a business partner to the Executive Director on the organization's financial, budgeting, and administrative processes
  • Prepares month-end and year-end financial statements
  • Responsible for ensuring all tax filings are completed and filed timely
  • Oversees the work of the Accounting Coordinator to ensure all invoices, reimbursements, and weekend money receipts are processed and tracked timely and accurately
  • Owns the full Accounts Receivable and Grant Revenue cycle, including accurately recording donor pledges, timely execution of grant drawdowns, AR deposits, and the reconciliation of restricted and unrestricted funds to ensure accurate revenue recognition and optimal cash flow
  • Collaborates with the Development Director to ensure financial integrity and accurate reporting through regular gift-to-finance reconciliation
  • Generates monthly financial reports, including departmental income statement and income statement with budget comparison for distribution to the Board of Directors, Club, the Executive Director, and Program Directors
  • Generates monthly reports of program fees compared to budget and distributes to the Program Directors
  • Generates monthly accounts receivable report and prepares discrepancy report
  • Manages the monthly close process and reconciles general ledger asset, liability, revenue, and expense accounts monthly
  • Collects information for third-party to complete the Texas Department of Family Protective Services (TDFPS) cost reports for all programs, attends the annual training for cost reports, and maintains files for audit
  • In coordination with the Executive Director, prepares the annual budget and presents it to the Budget and Finance Committee
  • Manages the financial reports for grants and restricted donations and maintains comprehensive files to support billing and other recordkeeping required for grants and contracts
  • Coordinates annual audit, tax return, and grant monitoring; ensures annual audit and grant monitoring is completed in a timely manner and without findings
  • Maintains fixed asset and depreciation records for the organization
  • Communicates with staff and department leaders to provide financial updates and overviews, create and support a strong culture of financial oversight, and strengthen staff and board fiscal literacy
  • Works with the Club Treasurer regarding fundraising activities to ensure income and expenses are posted accurately
  • Assists the Executive Director with insurance policies and renewals
  • Participates on the Executive and Leadership Teams
  • Provides supervision to the Accounting Coordinator
  • Provides payroll backup to the Human Resources Director
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
