About The Position

Founded in 1996, Duplitech is one of L.A.'s most respected independent media service labs. We provide digital content solutions for Media and Entertainment platforms, streamers, FAST channels, and content owners. Our in-house services include 4K film scanning and remastering, Blu-ray/DVD authoring, mezzanine package creation and QC for digital release, technical editing and asset conform, standards conversion, subtitling, and audio restoration/up-mix. This internship is offered in partnership with the AMIA Pathways Fellowship, a program intended to forge pathways into the audiovisual preservation field for people from groups historically underrepresented in the profession. Internship Structure & Commitment This is a paid internship lasting 10-12 weeks, scheduled for 25-32 hours per week (up to 300 hours total). Duplitech will provide two paid hours per week specifically scheduled for the intern to participate in AMIA Pathways Fellowship activities and webinars. As part of their professional development, the intern will present about their internship experience at the annual AMIA conference in December.

Requirements

  • A strong interest in moving image preservation and a desire to learn technical film handling and film scanning processes
  • Familiarity with or basic exposure to handling 16mm and/or 35mm motion picture film elements (training will be provided on identifying film formats, inspection, repair and cleaning. Academic, volunteer, or professional experience is welcome).
  • High attention to detail, specifically for inspecting film for sprocket or frame damage, repairing film, and recording data with a high level of accuracy.
  • Basic understanding of inventory management and data entry (training on Zytech Media Pulse will be provided; prior knowledge is a plus).
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs of film boxes for shipments.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the Lipsner Smith film cleaner, 35mm magnetic audio, or magnetic media tape transfers are a plus

Responsibilities

  • Prepare 16mm and 35mm archival film elements for 2K and 4K scanning.
  • Visually identify, inspect, handle, repair and clean film assets, developing the ability to assess the quality of various elements received.
  • Manage the cleaning and repairing of film elements prior to scanning.
  • Receive and barcode library and media assets.
  • Prepare shipments for the return of film assets.
  • Input metadata into the Zytech Media Pulse database system.
  • Thread film and operate a LaserGraphics Director and LaserGraphics Scanstation 4K Film Scanner.
  • Scanning as it applies to the entire remastering workflow including conform, restoration, color and master delivery. (Training will be provided on identification and use of digital file formats including image sequences, containers and codecs.)
  • Apply concepts learned from the AMIA Pathways curriculum, such as topics covering analog film and video preservation.
