About The Position

Variety is seeking a Film Reporter to cover the major movie studios and streamers, as well as the talent agencies. The ideal candidate is a skilled and dynamic writer and reporter with an ability to cultivate sources and break news. They should have an interest in the entertainment industry and the inner workings of the companies who produce films and streaming content. The role requires someone who can write on tight deadlines for the web, as well as a person who can craft compelling features on the business of Hollywood. This position is in our Los Angeles office.

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience at a print or digital media outlet, preferably with an emphasis on technology and/or entertainment.
• Strong writing and headline skills.
• An ability to engage with a digital audience.
• Curiosity about various forms of storytelling.
• High-level organizational skills and a willingness to juggle multiple assignments at once.
• As Variety values in-person collaboration and team cohesion, employees work onsite 4 days a week and 1 day remotely with a focus on maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

• Write timely and thought-provoking articles, including handling breaking news stories for our website and magazine.
• Break exclusive stories on studios, streamers, agencies and guilds.
• Develop a network of sources, including studio executives, managers, agents, and filmmakers.
• Collaborate with Variety’s editorial team on attention-getting stories, while working closely with our social media and digital team to ensure that your articles are promoted across platforms.
• Cover and appear at industry events, including major film festivals, panels and premieres.
