About The Position

We are seeking a field teacher to lead hands-on, nature-based Youth and Family Programs at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (Wellfleet) and Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary (Barnstable). These programs are geared towards audiences including families with children ages 4 and older and visiting youth groups. Field teachers work closely with our year-round education and conservation science staff to provide coastal habitat and wildlife education experiences that engage the public with ongoing Mass Audubon conservation work. Long Pasture and Wellfleet Bay are home to a variety of habitats, including salt marsh, sandy beach, and tidal flats, as well as forest and freshwater wetlands.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Experience teaching and working with children/families in outdoor, school or camp settings
  • A love of nature and teaching outdoors
  • Excellent teaching and interpretive skills and experience and comfort with instructional technologies
  • Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion
  • Interest and experience with natural history, environmental education and/or science education
  • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively as a positive contributor to the team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and proficiency in office software applications
  • Hold current (or willingness to obtain) certifications in community CPR and First Aid (child and adult levels)
  • Comfortability with aquatic watercraft-related activities
  • Ability to work 1 weekend day per week

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Cape Cod natural history, species conservation, and environmental education
  • Experience in youth education, ages 4-14
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching or other equity-based pedagogy

Responsibilities

  • Lead hands-on, inquiry-based Youth and Family programs including regularly offered public programs at the Sanctuary, and specialized programming requests for visiting youth groups throughout the summer
  • Assist with off-site aquatics-based programs including Marine Life Cruises, kayak programs, or other boat trips
  • Work with our Education team to ensure that the highest level of programming is consistently delivered to these visiting audiences, and accurate habitat/wildlife information is conveyed
  • Become familiar with a variety of coastal habitats, species, and Mass Audubon conservation work to help promote environmental literacy and appreciation for the natural world
  • Maintain and assist with cleaning/organizing of education materials
  • Monitor program participants in indoor and outdoor environments and maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority

Benefits

  • This position’s pay range is $18.48-$20.79 per hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.
  • This is not a benefits eligible position.
