About The Position

Directs, analyzes, and evaluates all functions and processes within the field maintenance division of the transportation department. Responsible for ensuring total compliance with all aspects of legal, financial, preventive maintenance, and safety regulations relating to the maintenance and repair of school buses and transportation fleet vehicles. Acts as the liaison with interdepartmental and intradepartmental personnel to effectively manage and execute all administrative and highly evaluative maintenance and department related functions.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge and successful experiences with preventative fleet maintenance and practices for school bus fleets
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Apps
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently to successfully plan, organize and implement transportation programs and special projects
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternate solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals
  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local school system policies, procedures, laws, and regulations with regards to all facets of pupil transportation
  • Ability to effectively screen, interview and select qualified applicants for transportation maintenance positions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, external agencies, attorneys, parents, and the community.
  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university
  • Eight years concentrated experience in school bus operations and/or heavy-duty diesel fleets
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Hold or have the ability to obtain a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within 60 days of assuming the position
  • North Carolina School Bus Inspector Certification through the North Carolina Department of Instruction Transportation Services must be obtained within 90 days of employment and remain valid during period of employment.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent vocational/technical training
  • Proficient knowledge of Business System Information Portal (BSIP)
  • Proficient knowledge of EKOS (a business management system).

Responsibilities

  • Manages and oversees the development of the maintenance division work plan, projects, and programs; monitors workflow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures. Specifically monitors and develops action plans for the following maintenance reports: Daily TD-27 report-percent of the bus fleet out of service
  • Tracks all maintenance repairs and warranty repairs completed offsite by contract vendors
  • Tracks 30-day inspections on school buses and reports compliance monthly to Director of Fleet Logistics
  • Prepares monthly maintenance reports for the Director of Fleet Logistics.
  • Evaluates and ensures all aspects of fleet maintenance are complying and fully executed within Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. This includes all industry standards and laws related to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), preventative maintenance, and inspections
  • Develops and coordinates required and increasingly advanced professional and skilled staff training.
  • Assists in preparation and maintenance of regular federal, state, and local reports.
  • Participate in the state annual audit of the maintenance fleet.
  • Analyzes and evaluates for maintenance and specified department trends, patterns, and progress, as needed.
  • Recommends appropriate action plan for improvements, as needed, to the Director of Fleet Logistics
  • Oversees and manages all facets of accident/incident procedures for the department.
  • Serves as the liaison with transportation staff, as required, supporting accurate and comprehensive reporting and evaluation processes.
  • Assists in preparation and maintenance of regular federal, state, and local reports.
  • Participates in the state annual audit of the maintenance fleet.
  • Analyzes and evaluates for maintenance and specified department trends, patterns, and progress, as needed.
  • Recommends appropriate action plan for improvements, as needed, to the Director of Fleet Logistics.
  • Assists in planning and coordination for facilities construction, bus parking lot layouts, or school renovations impacting bus traffic flow.
  • Responsible for maintaining a level of accountability for all Field Team Leaders and Field Mechanics to ensure safe buses through specific measurements
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
