About The Position

Build your hands-on preservation trades and leadership skills with the Massachusetts Historic Preservation Corps addressing a range of preservation needs, primarily carpentry and preservation maintenance. Crew members will have the opportunity to develop their skills in several preservation and general trades, including carpentry, masonry, window restoration, wood door repairs, painting, and other preservation maintenance tasks. The ideal Leader is excited about hands-on trades work, has at least one year experience and/or training in preservation trades, and is ready to support a team of young people learning trades at historic sites.

Requirements

  • Experience working with youth or young adults
  • 1+ year(s) experience with historic preservation trades or related skills – i.e., carpentry, window restoration, masonry, cultural landscape maintenance.
  • Physical effort is heavy to moderate for this position and requires occasional lifting or handling materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted, following proper lifting techniques to avoid injury.
  • Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
  • Must be able to attain a Wilderness First Aid certification before March 10.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must have the ability to legally work in the US
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards; driving a work vehicle is required for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a Crew Supervisor in the field, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
  • Serve as an Advisor, by supporting members in technical preservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching historic preservation skills
  • Act as a Project Leader, by communicating with on-site partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
  • Perform tasks as a Program Administrator , by organizing logistics, completing documentation such as Service Logs and Project Reports, tracking expenses, and communicating with SCA HP Corps staff
  • Respond to and manage incidents and crew conflicts in the field and report all issues, conflicts, and incidents to program staff
  • Maintain group norms and a culture of safety – emotional and physical – throughout the season
  • Ensure projects are moving forward safely and at an appropriate pace in line with project calendar and crew rotation schedule
  • Maintain cleanliness of shop/office areas including sweeping, mopping, and organizing
  • Assist with program vehicle management including bringing vehicles in for oil changes and maintenance
  • Address office needs such as loading printer paper, replacing printer toner, ordering office supplies, etc.
