About The Position

Great Lakes Energy is seeking a Fiber OSP Technician to ensure the quality, integrity, and reliability of its fiber optic outside plant through inspection, documentation, field support, and minor repair of fiber systems. Great Lakes Energy has been powering rural communities across 26 counties in western and northern Michigan for over 85 years, serving over 128,000 meters as the third-largest Michigan-based electric utility and the state's largest member-owned power company. They are also leaders in advanced fiber technology through Truestream, their communication solutions subsidiary. With over 300 team members, Great Lakes Energy is a close-knit team focused on innovation, service, and community. This is a field-first role, involving daily inspections of underground fiber installations, including risers, pedestals, and trace wires, verifying clearances, and documenting as-built conditions. The technician will troubleshoot issues, perform minor repairs, and support installation and maintenance activities to ensure projects proceed safely and efficiently. They will investigate and identify root causes of problems and help implement practical solutions. The role involves travel throughout West Michigan, offering varied settings and tasks. Collaboration with internal teams, contractors, and members is essential to ensure work meets company standards. Responsibilities range from conducting site surveys to assisting with splicing during routine and emergency work, making this role hands-on and crucial for maintaining a high-performing network.

Requirements

  • Enjoy working outdoors and take pride in hands-on, technical work
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions and across a broad service area throughout West Michigan
  • Dependable, adaptable, and ready to respond when issues arise
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic outside plant, including equipment, specifications, and installation practices
  • Able to troubleshoot issues
  • Able to perform basic repairs
  • Able to support installation and splicing activities as needed
  • Work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Communicate clearly with teammates, contractors, and members
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • At least five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience
