Federal Engineering Manager

VirtruTampa, FL
1d$200,000 - $250,000

About The Position

While the rest of the security industry obsesses over locking data down to prevent it from being lost or stolen, we're doing something fundamentally different at Virtru. We're setting data free so that you can intentionally share it with others, but without sacrificing security, privacy, or control. We've created both a suite of powerful data protection applications and an open platform that's sparking an ecosystem of innovation. Through the Trusted Data Format (TDF) open standard, we're not just protecting data; we're creating a new paradigm where security enables sharing rather than preventing it. Think of us as the Android of data protection: a robust platform with an open core that developers and partners can build upon, coupled with our own best-in-class applications that showcase what's possible when you reimagine security from the ground up. Backed by Iconiq Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Foundry Capital, and Tiger Global, we're helping Fortune 500 companies and government agencies discover that true data security means having the freedom to share, collaborate, and innovate — without compromise. Team & Position Details: As a Federal Engineering Team Lead, you will report directly to the Director of Federal Programs. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a team of engineers in deploying, sustaining, and improving Virtru’s Data Security Platform across highly complex, mission‑critical federal environments. Your work directly enables warfighters, analysts, and partner organizations to share sensitive information securely across multi‑domain and multi‑classification networks. This role blends deep hands‑on technical execution with leadership. You will serve as both a performing Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) and the team lead responsible for coaching engineers, coordinating technical work across programs, and ensuring our federal customers receive reliable, timely support. Your team’s impact is measured not only through successful deployments but also in the stability, security, and mission readiness of the environments we support.

Requirements

  • Strong hands‑on engineering background in deployments, Linux systems, containers, or Kubernetes (in classified or constrained environments).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, coach peers, and coordinate complex multi-stakeholder work.
  • Advanced understanding of containerization, Kubernetes (k8s) and orchestration tooling such as OpenShift, Rancher, and Helm.
  • Proficiency in DevSecOps practices, with experience in source code repositories and CI/CD pipeline solutions such as Team Foundation Server/Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, and GitHub.
  • Able to collaborate and adapt to shifting priorities as business needs evolve
  • Must have, and be willing to maintain, a Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility. CI polygraph is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting ATO, security assessments, Purple/Red teams, or federal accreditation workflows.
  • Familiarity with HSMs, key management, CAS, or cross‑domain architectures.
  • Background working in joint, coalition, or multi‑INT federal systems.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as both a hands‑on engineer (FDE) and the day‑to‑day technical lead for a team of forward deployed engineers.
  • Lead technical execution and coordination across multiple federal programs, ensuring deployments, upgrades, and mission tasks are completed successfully.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and escalation support to engineers while acting as the primary technical interface to PMs, CSMs, and mission partners.
  • Deploy, configure, troubleshoot, and validate Virtru DSP components across secure customer networks.
  • Participate in architecture discussions, migration efforts (Kubernetes, VKS, cloud‑to‑on‑prem), and integration planning.
  • Conduct technical deep‑dives with customer engineering teams and partner organizations.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and upskilling new technical staff as the team grows.
  • Provide weekly prioritization, transparency, and reporting on engineering work across supported programs.

Benefits

  • A Flexible PTO policy — we strongly encourage you to take time off (in addition to 14 holidays) to ensure that you are getting the proper time needed to unplug and recharge.
  • A $1,500 annual Learning & Development Stipend focused on providing you the resources to continually learn and professionally grow.
  • Frequent company-sponsored team celebrations that provide ample opportunities to connect with teammates and be social!
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program
  • Access to Headspace, a mental health app tailored to your specific needs.
  • A flat 3% contribution to your retirement account
  • A high degree of flexibility — Have an appointment, errand, or family emergency to take care of? Hop to it! We give you the time and space to take care of you and your own first.
  • Competitive compensation
  • Generous parental, medical, and bereavement policies
  • 401K contribution and stock options
  • Full medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • New Hire Swag and IT Welcome boxes
  • Structured semi-annual 360° performance reviews
