Location: Laredo Animal Protective Society (LAPS) 2500 Gonzalez St. Laredo, TX 78040 Mission: LAPS will provide shelter for homeless, adoptable dogs and cats in Laredo and Webb County until they can be successfully adopted into permanent homes; address the dog and cat overpopulation crisis by helping to provide affordable spay/neuter services to the community; and working to eliminate animal cruelty and neglect through education. Goals of this program include: Develop interest in public service through employment with TAMIU and be assigned to local non-profit, government, or community-based organizations. Apply skills and theories gained through coursework to solve problems and explore issues outside the classroom. Enhance career competencies, such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership. Articulate how experiences will shape personal, academic, and professional pursuits. Laredo Animal Protective Society (LAPS) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Program Intern to assist in various aspects of animal welfare, including shelter operations, community outreach, and education. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in animal care, advocacy, and nonprofit management while making a tangible difference in the lives of homeless animals in Laredo and Webb County.

Requirements

  • Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate and 3 credit hours per semester for graduates.
  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduates' students.
  • Must have a current and complete file with the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Must demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA application annually.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, or permanent residence, or has an alien registration number.an eligible non-citizen.
  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily shelter activities, including animal intake, care, and maintenance of facilities.
  • Ensure that the shelter environment is clean, safe, and welcoming for all animals.
  • Help organize and manage adoption events, assist potential adopters with inquiries, and ensure a smooth transition for animals into their new homes.
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote LAPS' services, including affordable spay/neuter programs and educational campaigns aimed at reducing animal overpopulation and cruelty.
  • Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers.
  • Assist in organizing volunteer schedules and activities.
  • Support the development and implementation of educational programs aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership and preventing animal cruelty.
  • Assist in planning and executing fundraising events to support LAPS' mission.
  • Work on developing partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.
