About The Position

The Shellfish Farm and Wild Harvest Manager will be responsible for day to day operation of a shellfish farm, including but not limited to: sourcing clam and oyster seed, planting, growing, harvesting, processing transporting shellfish from farm to buyer, and keeping all required paperwork. The manager will also organize the exercise of treaty rights to harvest naturally occurring clams and oysters on private land.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. On the job training may substitute.
  • Experience and knowledge using word processing and spreadsheets (i.e. Word for Windows, Excel, Access, etc.)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Customer service and confidentiality are a significant aspect of the job. Contacts are both within and external to the Tribe and may be of a non-routine nature and involve complex, technical issues that relate to overall Tribal operations and services.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Work assignments require the ability to make non-routine decisions, impact both people and operations on a regular, tactical basis. Decisions require significant thinking, but are generally made with sufficient information and detail. For example, if it is discovered that shellfish are experiencing mortalities, immediate action is required to ascertain why and try to prevent further loss.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Marine piloting, navigation, marine and geographic plotting electronics.
  • Ability to monitor weather, identify species, and analyze shellfish quality.
  • Ability to moderate difficult and volatile situations.
  • Required to work during evenings and weekends as the job requires.
  • May be required to respond to emergencies.
  • Must be alert, having good hearing/sight and mobility to perform inspections and resource management.
  • Must be comfortable working around the water and be able to swim.

Responsibilities

  • Procures and plants shellfish seed.
  • Installs and maintains anti-predator measures.
  • Monitors growth and health of shellfish by checking density, size, and condition.
  • Proactively protects crop from severe weather.
  • Working with regulatory agencies to maintain all required harvest records.
  • Monitor environmental conditions and adapt growing methods to prevent adverse effects to shellfish health and growth.
  • Schedule and supervise harvesting to meet demand and ensure quality standards.
  • Maintain survival and growth information and keep inventory of shellfish on the farm.
  • Manage gear and infrastructure. Repair, clean, and replace as needed.
  • Assess methods for optimal performance of the farm
  • Synthesize all records into a coherent report and communicate the results to various groups of stakeholders.
  • To follow all legal requirements to notify property owners and schedule population surveys on private and public beaches to determine if a natural bed of shellfish exists.
  • To follow all legal requirement to notify property owners when a harvest will occur on private or public property.
  • Arrange for and or conduct shellfish harvests on private and public property.
  • Maintain all paperwork required for commercial harvests on private and public property.
  • Facilitate potential cooperative activities between the tribe and private beach owners to maximize shellfish harvest amounts.
  • Manage budgets and inventory.
  • Order farm supplies, equipment, and seed stock.
  • Track production yields and forecast future output.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
