About The Position

The Brooklyn Center Community School (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our team as a Family Liaison at our Elementary Building. The Family Liaison is responsible for supporting family engagement efforts. This position requires applicants to be fluent in Spanish and English. This includes building relationships with families and providing information about programs and services available to students and families and information regarding school and/or district activities and procedures. This position also helps to inform district staff on strategies for increasingly successful engagement with families. Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of school and district rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience working with LGBTQ, immigrant, refugee, poor and disenfranchised people.
  • Experience coordinating and case managing multiple services for families with multiple needs.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively with people of different cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to understand and work with various community agencies and their delivery systems, including schools, county, state, and social service agencies
  • Possess a high level of interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks with efficiency
  • Detail-oriented; Ability to structure and manage responsibilities independently with minimal direct supervision
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in completing forms, preparing reports, organizing data, maintaining records
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and a clear understanding of the English language
  • Computer skills to use Windows, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word programs.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English.
  • Must have a valid MN drivers license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation.
  • Sitting, standing, walking, squatting/kneeling, climbing, balancing, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, hearing, and seeing.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with diverse populations and urban school settings preferred.
  • Previous experience with and understanding of family resource navigation.
  • Preference given to proficiency in a second language

Responsibilities

  • Provide or assist parents and guardians in locating information and resources available, giving them the power to advocate and choose the best outcome for their children and family, and making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, concepts, rules and languages in the school and other community settings.
  • Support the alignment of educational rights and services for students, including enrollment, transportation, nutrition services, special services, and Community Schools services.
  • Assign Interpreters or Interpret for special events and meetings such as an open house, family nights, and parent/teacher conferences. Find and assess quality interpreters to hire for special events and conferences.
  • Facilitate communication between Spanish speaking families and school staff: by phone, in person, or written, regarding topics including but not limited to: academic, health, and behavioral concerns, transportation, food service, registration, etc.
  • Work with the district to develop/implement strategies to best serve Spanish-speaking students/families
  • Translate documents and/or provide supplemental translated material.
  • Support the success of students and positive relationships between school and families by participating in parent/teacher conferences, family meetings with administration, social workers, etc., IEP meetings and more.
  • Assist in bridging connections between families, school, and other community agencies; support the family-school partnership model.
  • In partnership with community schools site coordinators, manage the operation of the Family Resource Rooms.
  • Support the district in completing needs assessment, asset mapping, and evaluation of its services by conducting outreach and collecting data.
  • Respond to the needs of families with methods that may include, but are not limited to facilitating support groups, attending family-led group meetings, family meetings, and home visits.
  • Facilitate the process for welcoming new families to the district and communicating about district resources, supports, and processes.
  • Support various district family engagement efforts, including events, door knocking, etc.
  • Provide support for family involvement and volunteer management programs; recruit volunteers and support/services, based on needs assessments.
  • Assist in reducing language barriers of English Learners (students and families) by supporting the alignment and evaluation of interpretation and translation services and interpreting or translating communications as necessary.
  • Provide parent involvement support for teachers and other district staff; introducing strategies for success.
  • Work with the district staff to develop and implement strategies to best serve all families.
  • Assist in making announcements regarding school closures, emergencies, events, etc. to families on behalf of the district.
  • Participate in community committees, groups, and events to increase family and community engagement efforts.
  • Participate in projects and activities to stay abreast of local efforts and resources to help move the Community Schools model forward.
  • Maintain and organize materials and resources for users.
  • Maintain family records, data, reports, tracking forms and other data as requested.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
