About The Position

Riverside Healthcare is seeking a skilled and dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) to join our birthing center float pool in Kankakee, Illinois. The ideal candidate will provide exceptional patient care to expectant mothers and their newborns in a fast-paced and supportive environment. As a float nurse, you will work closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and positive childbirth experiences, managing both routine deliveries and emergencies with competence and empathy. Additionally, this position requires flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure. Scheduling Requirements: Birthing center float pool RNs will float to all areas of competency, to include nursery, labor and delivery, and postpartum. Weekend and holiday rotations required.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Illinois.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required or willing to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of three years Nursery, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum experience preferred.
  • BSN preferred
  • Professional nursing certification in the area of specialty is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to women before, during, and after labor, including monitoring maternal and fetal vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with epidurals
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients
  • Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families throughout the labor process
  • Monitor labor progression using fetal monitoring devices, and respond to any abnormalities or emergencies as necessary
  • Assist in all aspects of labor, including preparing patients for delivery, guiding mothers through labor, and coaching during pushing
  • Assist physicians with vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections (C-sections), including prepping the delivery room and ensuring sterile environments
  • Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation and APGAR scoring, as needed
  • Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including administering medications, monitoring recovery, and facilitating skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding support
  • Educate patients and families about postpartum care, newborn care, preterm infant care, and any discharge instructions
  • Respond to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and fetal distress with quick thinking and effective interventions
  • Participate in Code OB, Code Blue, or other emergency protocols as necessary
  • Educate mothers and families about postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, and newborn care
  • Provide specialized care for critically ill newborns, including preterm infants and those with congenital conditions
  • Administer medications, fluids, and nutritional support, including tube feedings and IV therapy
  • Monitor vital signs and manage complex medical equipment such as ventilators and incubators
  • Perform and document newborn assessments, including neurological, respiratory, and cardiac monitoring
  • Offer guidance on breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, and developmental milestones
  • Team member will maintain annual education requirements
  • Participate in unit meetings, educational workshops, and ongoing training to stay updated on best practices.
  • Assist with maintaining unit cleanliness, supplies, and equipment.
  • Serve as a mentor or preceptor to new nurses and nursing students.
  • Participate in hospital initiatives, community outreach programs, and quality improvement efforts.
