About The Position

The Faculty Mini-Sabbatical Program is designed to bring top academic talent from universities across the world for a consecutive 1-3 month visit to the Laboratory. This program provides an excellent opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and the development of new collaborations. Please note that it is not intended to provide direct support for specific research activities. Selected faculty members will have access to LLNL’s extensive computing facilities, specialized laboratory facilities and field equipment. These employees will be hosted by a staff scientist and work collaboratively for 1-3 months within a research group/division at LLNL. Selected faculty for this call will begin sabbatical between October 2026 to April 2027. A separate summer call will be posted for those interested in starting between May 2027 to September 2027. Each Faculty Scholar is selected based upon their outstanding scholarship and research expertise and overlap with the Lab’s mission. Please submit a cover letter and your CV. The cover letter should emphasize the educational opportunity and benefits you expect from this sabbatical and clearly name your LLNL host. Applicants must have a confirmed LLNL host/sponsor and an agreed-upon collaborative project before submitting an application. This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the assignment. Deadline for applications is May 29, 2026

Requirements

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See Additional Information section below for details.
  • PhD in relevant scientific field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Must be a continuing faculty member at an accredited research institution.
  • Extensive knowledge for applicant’s science field demonstrated by a publication record.
  • Demonstrated creativity, exceptional ability, and proven accomplishments in applicant’s area of specialization.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
  • Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise in one or more of the following areas: Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Material Science, Engineering, Nuclear Science, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Geoscience, Energy, Lasers, and/or Biology.
  • Participate in activities as appropriate to provide and gain exposure to the laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
