Summary and Nature of the Work Facility Systems Operator performs skilled technical work in monitoring, assessing, and supporting the operation of building systems throughout the facility. Operating from the centralized Operations Center, this position continuously monitors Building Automation Systems (BAS), life safety systems, mechanical and electrical equipment, and various facility infrastructure platforms to ensure safe, reliable, and uninterrupted hospital operations. The incumbent receives, evaluates, and triages work requests, dispatches appropriate personnel, and performs low level preventive maintenance tasks to support system performance and regulatory compliance. The Facility Systems Operator must exercise sound judgment to identify abnormal system conditions, respond to alarms, and escalate issues to the appropriate trade or supervisor when needed. This position has no supervisory or leadership responsibilities but requires a strong understanding of systems operations, equipment behavior, and facility workflows to ensure timely responses and effective coordination with maintenance teams.

Requirements

  • Must have a High School Diploma or a GED equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year experience working in a Facility Maintenance capacity, or related Associates/Technical College degree.
  • Intermediate level of knowledge on HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, customer service-oriented, skilled at coordinating with clinical/mechanical/environmental to minimize disruption to stakeholder services and fire/life safety.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, preventive maintenance practices, and industry standards related to healthcare building systems and infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in using CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for scheduling, tracking, and reporting maintenance activities.
  • Candidate must be detail-orientated, documenting processes and procedures as they relate to the position as well as any incidents that may occur.
  • Able to satisfactorily pass a criminal background check and drug screen.
  • A valid driver's license meeting P1 Service requirements and reliable transportation are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid trade license in a relevant discipline (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical systems).
  • Trade-specific certifications relevant to area of expertise.
  • Proficiency in CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for managing maintenance operations and reporting.
  • Familiarity with The Joint Commission (JC) Base Camp standards, particularly in the Environment of Care domain.
  • Experience with PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work effectively with people at all levels in an organization.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire/life safety, and building automation systems using reliability centered maintenance strategies to ensure continuous, safe operation.
  • Become proficient in the use, monitoring, and navigation of multiple building and facility management platforms including: Metasys, Simplex, JCI, Automated Logic, Trane Tracer, Pneumatic Tube System, APC, Kone, ARCHIBUS, and other applicable systems.
  • Observe system conditions and verify that pressures, temperatures, humidity, ventilation, and other parameters remain within allowable ranges.
  • Monitor critical electrical distribution components, including breakers, generators, transformers, ATS units, and related equipment.

  • Respond to and assess BAS alarms; determine urgency; initiate corrective action; and escalate issues based on established procedures.
  • May perform administrative duties and responsibilities to include contracts, budgets, processing invoices, work scheduling to ensure 24/7 coverage of ops, safety, training documentation, communication with other departments.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with P1 Service and customer management by providing timely, accurate, and complete information.
  • Support operational alignment by participating in meetings and executing on direction provided by P1 FMO Leadership.
  • Foster strong internal collaboration by maintaining effective working relationships with cross-functional teams and leadership.
  • Escalate communication issues between service teams and hospital stakeholders to the designated point of contact, whether the FMO Operations Manager or the FMO Facilities Manager/Supervisor, as appropriate.
  • Coordinate maintenance of machinery and mechanical equipment in accordance with diagrams, blueprints, shop drawings, SOPs, approved submittals, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, reference materials, and technical documents to determine procedures or operational impacts.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized technical reference library for equipment manuals, SOPs, and system documentation.
  • Perform low level preventive maintenance and testing, including (e.g. Eyewash station checks, spot-checking room pressures, facility rounding, and routine systems verification).
  • Follow all P1 Service & Hospital policies, departmental procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Support compliance with JC (The Joint Commission), State Fire Marshal requirements, and all other Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) regulations.
  • Implement proper lockout/tagout, PPE, and life safety procedures during repair and maintenance activities.
  • Participate in required safety meetings, training, and certification programs as assigned.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, hazards, or incidents to a Lead or Supervisor.
  • Ensure work areas remain clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
  • Work under the direction of Lead Operator and contribute to team-based problem solving and operational improvements.
  • Participate in assigned training programs to develop technical skills and maintain knowledge of evolving equipment, systems, and P1 Service annual compliance trainings.
  • Participates in annual performance review process.
  • Seek clarification and guidance as needed to ensure safe and effective performance.
  • Foster collaborative partnerships that support mutual organizational goals and customer satisfaction.
  • Promotes a positive, inclusive, and safety-conscious workplace culture.
  • Reviews all work and assures performance in accordance with established customer expectations as well as health system standards.
