About The Position

Space Center Houston is a space exploration learning destination dedicated to revealing how science and humanity power space exploration through meaningful, moving experiences about people and the courage, innovation, and teamwork they use to expand the boundaries of what's possible. We inspire guests of all ages to connect with the significance of space exploration as incredible feats of human spaceflight continue to bring joy and wonder to the world. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate. We are currently seeking a full-time Facilities Technician responsible for the building and exhibits, ensuring maintenance and effectiveness of the Space Center Houston facilities. Responsibilities and qualifications are shown below:

Requirements

  • A minimum of three years work experience in facility maintenance or a closely related field with and a strong working knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and make sound recommendations for repairs.
  • Ability to read gauges, blueprints and instructions with a working knowledge of standard maintenance tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with all levels of the organization.
  • Must be able to work with little or no supervision.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Ability to climb ladder system, stairways and negotiate close proximity spaces with a minimum of 18 inches clearance.
  • Must be in physical condition satisfactory to allow climbing ladders and lifting of weight up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and holidays. You must be available to work extended hours as needed.
  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and motor vehicle check. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Capable of working in outdoor areas with hot or cold weather conditions and confined spaces.
  • Comfortable working at elevated heights using appropriate fall protection.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, diagnose and repair Space Center Houston’s equipment, exhibits and artifacts.
  • Set up and tear down exhibits and special events including loading and unloading, following diagrams and constructing of components.
  • Complete work orders delegated as directed.
  • Assists specialty trades with repairs, replacement, and construction projects.
  • Complete preventive maintenance checks on a determined basis.
  • Pick up parts locally for emergency repairs or pending needs.
  • Respond to fire alarms and any other emergency calls.
  • Complete all necessary maintenance related records and productivity forms.
  • Repair and maintain electrical equipment, e.g. switches, lighting, small appliances, etc.
  • Repair and maintain HVAC systems and other related equipment.
  • Repairs and replace common plumbing equipment and materials.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and always work safely. Report any safety concerns or unsafe conditions to the Facilities Lead or Manager and/or the Safety Manager as needed.
  • Support after-hours building needs and activities as required.
  • Assist in training other members of the Facilities team as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
