A major focus of this position will be supporting the vivarium, ensuring all equipment, utilities, and facility conditions meet strict compliance, performance, and environmental standards. While the technician will not be stationed in the vivarium full‑time, the majority of the work for this role will take place within that environment, including completion of required PMs, CMs, environmental checks, and work orders specific to vivarium operations. This is a hands‑on role requiring strong technical ability, attention to detail, professionalism, and effective teamwork across the Facilities and Research departments.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • Demonstrated experience performing MIG/TIG/arc welding and the ability to safely and effectively operate welding machines and related tools.
  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair welding equipment and select appropriate materials for each job.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities to identify cost-effective, durable maintenance solutions.
  • Clear, professional communication with site managers, research teams, and external vendors.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, work at heights, and stand for extended periods.
  • Background in commercial facility maintenance or construction trades (carpentry, tiling, drywall, finishing) is highly preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with controlled environments, air‑handling systems, environmental chambers, or regulated research spaces.
  • Experience with a CMMS or digital maintenance platform for receiving, managing, and closing work orders.
  • Ability to track PM schedules, asset history, inventory, and compliance documentation.
  • Comfort using mobile devices or tablets for inspections, reporting, and real‑time updates.
  • Familiarity with systems such as eMaint, Maximo, FMX, Service Channel, Maintenance Connection, Upkeep, or similar tools.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular walkthroughs to ensure the vivarium remains clean, operational, and compliant with facility and environmental standards.
  • Complete all preventative maintenance (PMs) and corrective maintenance (CMs) for vivarium‑related equipment, including HVAC components, air handling units, lighting systems, water supply systems, alarms, monitoring devices, and specialized mechanical systems.
  • Respond to vivarium‑specific work orders promptly to ensure minimal disruption to research operations.
  • Collaborate with research and animal‑care personnel to maintain proper environmental conditions and equipment uptime.
  • Respond quickly to daily maintenance requests, including plumbing, electrical, lighting, and general repairs.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on HVAC systems, pumps, motors, mechanical equipment, and building systems.
  • Conduct routine building inspections—interior and exterior—including compliance walkthroughs, safety checks, and “IACUC” inspections.
  • Carry out general carpentry, drywall repair, tiling, cabinetry work, and light remodeling to maintain a clean and professional facility environment.
  • Perform light to moderate welding tasks (MIG/TIG/arc). Safely operate welding machines, including proper setup, adjustment, material selection, and maintenance. Execute durable, accurate welds for metal repair, fabrication, equipment reinforcement, and structural support.
  • Work closely with the maintenance team and outside contractors to complete facility‑wide projects and large‑scale repairs.
  • Participate in an on‑call rotation to resolve urgent issues during off‑hours.
