About The Position

BioLegend is looking for a highly motivated Facilities Systems Engineer to join the team. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this position serves as a highly hands-on technical expert supporting multiple operational areas across the organization. While this role provides primary critical support for warehouse automation systems, its scope extends well beyond order fulfillment to encompass a broad range of engineering and technical responsibilities throughout our labs and facility. This multifaceted role is responsible for ensuring optimal performance of our state-of-the-art automated storage, conveyance, and picking systems, while also providing essential hands-on technical expertise for laboratory equipment, manufacturing systems, and other critical facility infrastructure. The position requires a dynamic professional who thrives in a hands-on environment and can apply technical knowledge directly to various platforms to maintain operational excellence throughout the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline with 3 years’ experience in all phases of repair and maintenance relevant to automated order fulfillment systems; Or High School/GED with 10 years’ of highly relevant experience.
  • 3 years of hands-on electromechanical experience, which may include but are not limited to performing repairs, component replacement, preventive maintenance, and operational testing.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years of experience with operation and maintenance of automated warehouse systems.
  • 4 years of facilities experience in the Biotech industry and/or lab equipment maintenance experience.
  • 2 years of experience using a robust and auditable quality maintenance system, including maintenance records and non-conformance investigation.
  • 2 years of formal education or equivalent on-the-job training in system operating software and interface with inventory software.
  • Intermediate-to-expert understanding of mechanical, electrical, and control systems with associated troubleshooting skills.
  • Intimate familiarity with warehouse automation components including PLC, sensors, actuators, encoders, scanners, conveyor systems (belted and roller), gearmotors, divert mechanisms, HMI, fault logic, and electronic operating modules.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Must communicate technical information accurately and succinctly to quickly resolve system faults and anomalies.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and provide guidance for Facilities and Order Fulfillment team members.
  • Broad knowledge of conveyer systems and related elements.

Responsibilities

  • System Performance Monitoring: Track operational metrics, uptime, and throughput of conveyor systems, robotic pickers, sorting equipment, laboratory instrumentation, and other critical technical systems throughout the facility
  • Preventive Maintenance Scheduling: Implement regular maintenance protocols to minimize downtime of critical automation components and maximize service life. Develop and execute maintenance strategies for a variety of warehouse, laboratory, and facility equipment
  • Vendor Coordination: Work with original equipment manufacturer technicians for specialized repairs and upgrades across all supported technical systems
  • Quality Management System Compliance: Ensure all maintenance activities, system modifications, and operational procedures adhere to ISO standards, GMP requirements, and internal quality protocols; Maintain proper documentation for audits and validation and conduct non-conformance investigations
  • Spare Parts Inventory Management: Maintain optimal inventory levels of critical components, establish reorder points, track usage patterns, and ensure proper storage conditions for sensitive parts to minimize system downtime across all technical platforms
  • Hands-On Troubleshooting (Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls): Apply systematic thinking, processes, and technical knowledge to investigate, diagnose and resolve non-routine issues with automated order fulfillment systems, laboratory equipment, and facility infrastructure
  • Control System Management: Support and use of PLC programming, HMI interfaces, and integration with warehouse management software and other operational systems
  • Technical Site Maintenance: Provide hands-on support for lab equipment installation, validation, troubleshooting, and repair; Coordinate with contractors and vendors for campus improvements and expansions, and for ongoing maintenance and repairs (e.g. HVAC, fire safety systems)
  • Technical Team Support: Oversee and support maintenance tasks and projects carried out by facility associates across multiple technical areas
  • Project Management: Perform as project manager for various Facilities and Operations related technical projects beyond warehouse automation
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work directly with warehouse, manufacturing, laboratory, and quality teams to ensure all technical systems support organizational objectives
  • Other projects or responsibilities as required.
