About The Position

This position is responsible for performing skilled painting and surface finishing work throughout Connecticut Children’s facilities under the supervision of the Facilities Manager. Duties include preparing, finishing, and maintaining interior and exterior surfaces using paint, wall coverings, and protective coatings; performing drywall installation and finishing; and operating trade-specific equipment. The role also includes estimating materials and labor, coordinating with other trades, and responding promptly to work orders and service calls. Work is performed in a hospital environment where timely responses and a high standard of customer service are essential. This position directly impacts patients, visitors, and staff by helping maintain a clean, safe, and visually appealing environment.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Five years as a journeyman painter.
  • Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of painting methods, procedures, practices, and tools. General understanding of how painting work intersects with other trades. Strong customer service orientation. Proficient in the safe use, operation, setup, and maintenance of hand tools and power tools. Ability to follow written and oral instructions effectively.
  • Skills: Produces work of the highest quality and craftsmanship. Demonstrates trade-specific knowledge, skills, and abilities through timely and effective completion of assigned work requests, as documented in work records and systems. Consistently adheres to safety procedures and protocols.
  • Abilities: Accurately identifies issues, develops, and communicates action plans in a timely manner. Follows Connecticut Children’s policies, ensuring sensitivity to operational needs across patient units, procedure areas, operating rooms, emergency rooms, offices, and research spaces. Maintains a high level of customer satisfaction, with no substantiated complaints regarding work or conduct. Demonstrates adherence to organizational policies, procedures, work rules, and trade agreements. Works collaboratively with Facilities team members and other departments; able to work independently, with other painters, or alongside other trades. Demonstrates professionalism, independence, and strong problem-solving skills; self-motivated and able to work effectively without immediate supervision, including during urgent situations.

Responsibilities

  • Painting & Finishing-30%: Prepare, prime, and finish interior and exterior surfaces using appropriate tools and techniques (brush, roller, spray equipment). Apply latex, solvent-based, enamel, stain, varnish, epoxy, and waterborne coatings in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Install wall finishes including wallpaper, vinyl wall coverings, vinyl wall protection, and borders. Operate and maintain spray equipment (airless, conventional, HVLP) and other trade-specific tools.
  • Surface Preparation & Drywall Finishing-20%: Clean and prepare surfaces (walls, ceilings, trim) using appropriate methods such as washing, sanding, scraping, and paint removal. Repair cracks, holes, and surface defects using patching compounds and fillers. Tape and finish drywall, including applying corner beads, tape, and multiple coats of joint compound with sanding between coats to achieve a smooth finish.
  • Project Coordination-10%: Meet regularly with Facilities Manager to review job status, schedule upcoming work, and address backlogs. Estimate required materials, labor hours, and tools for each project. Coordinate work activities with other trades, maintenance staff, and affected hospital departments to minimize disruption. Ensure timely completion of projects and resolve any delays or barriers.
  • Maintenance & Repair- 10%: Perform maintenance and repair of painted and finished surfaces as needed, replacing or refinishing components that are damaged, worn, or deteriorated. Ensure all work is completed in compliance with federal, state, OSHA regulations, and Connecticut Children's policies.
  • Work Order Management & Customer Service- 10%: Receive, review, and complete work orders in a timely and accurate manner. Respond to customer service requests and report unresolved issues to the Facilities Manager. Maintain effective communication with staff, patients, and visitors while working in occupied areas.
  • Equipment & Tool Maintenance- 10%: Set up, disassemble, clean, and maintain painting tools and equipment. Maintain inventory of supplies and tools; arrange for repair or replacement as needed. Maintain a clean and organized work cart, tool storage, and workspaces.
  • Safety, Cleanliness & Compliance-10%: Maintain clean and hazard-free job sites, ensuring areas are free of debris, dust, and equipment hazards. Follow safety protocols when working from ladders, scaffolding, or swing stages. Keep accurate records of time, materials, permits, and safety compliance documentation.
  • Performs Other Duties as Assigned
