About The Position

Under general supervision, installs, operates, maintains, overhauls and repairs large mechanical air conditioning, heating and fixed refrigeration systems. Work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequences based on changing work situations or work flow. Work requires general knowledge of the techniques, methods and procedures used to service and maintain facilities, equipment and grounds which are gained through a combination of training and experience. Performs a range of varied and non-routine tasks to provide building operation and maintenance services. Work includes monitoring, using and maintaining computer controlled building management, safety and security systems and electronic testing equipment. Solves problems by choosing among a range of defined alternatives. Work is reviewed upon completion for technical accuracy and compliance with instructions or established procedures. Develops a regular contact with individuals in other work groups or external vendors to obtain, clarify or give facts or information. Monitors, maintains and controls building mechanical and environmental equipment through the use of computerized building energy management system. Maintains work area, tools and equipment in safe and proper working condition. Represents JEA on job sites where building services are being performed by outside contractors. Monitors and maintains fire and other safety systems. Installs, operates, maintains, overhauls and repairs large mechanical air conditioning, heating and fixed refrigeration systems. Performs periodic inspections of air handling units, including inspection and lubrication of fans, motors and pumps in accordance with approved maintenance instructions. Installs, operates, maintains, overhauls and repairs fired and unfired pressure vessels. Maintains chemical water balance in boilers, cooling towers, and hydronic systems. Installs and/or replaces micro-computer control devices on new or existing systems. Monitors building operation systems in order to maintain them in proper operating condition. Performs periodic shutdowns in accordance with approved programs, as required. Repairs and maintains automatic control circuit relays and drive equipment. Performs minor building maintenance duties such as plumbing, electrical and structural repairs. Assists in the coordination of contract personnel performing building maintenance and operational services. Operates bucket truck. Operates and controls special tool and material lockup areas. Recommends changes in process or actions to ensure compliance with JEA plans, policies, and methods of operations and/or regulations. Trains, monitors and inspects the work of others in performance of facilities work. Ensures that safety meeting are conducted, safety rules are enforced, safe work practices are encouraged, unsafe conditions and behaviors are corrected and accidents are reported. Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications. Performs other job-related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Six (6) years of experience in maintenance, repair and operation of heating and air conditioning equipment that must have included work on centrifugal refrigeration equipment with at least two (2) years working as a Journeyman Class "A" HAR Mechanic.
  • Certificate of competency in at least one of the following areas is required and may be substituted for the Class "A" HAR Mechanic at the time of application in this classification and must be maintained during employment in this classification: Journeyman Class "A" HAR Mechanic issued by the City of Jacksonville, Certified Class "A" Air Conditioning Contractor, issued by the State of Florida DBPR, Certified Mechanical Contractor, issued by the State of Florida DBPR
  • A valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License is required within six (6) months of employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.
  • A valid driver's license is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.
  • Incumbent must: maintain correctable 20/40 vision and be able to distinguish primary colors, perceive depths and have hearing capabilities of 500 to 2000 Hertz and 25 decibels or better in one or both ears.
  • This position requires that employees be in compliance with JEA procedure HUMR - Screening Personnel Risk Assessments (pre-hire for “FACTA” designations; pre-hire and recurring for “CIP” designations).
