Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, a premier cultural institution in Washington, D.C., is seeking a skilled Facilities Engineer to join our dedicated Facilities team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the preservation and operation of this historic estate while working in a collaborative and mission-driven environment. Our magnificent estate features world-class collections of decorative arts, surrounded by 25 acres of serene gardens and natural woodlands. With approximately 130 dedicated staff members, we are committed to preserving this cultural treasure and sharing it with visitors from around the world. Position Summary The Facilities Engineer plays a critical role in maintaining the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems that protect our irreplaceable collections and ensure visitor comfort. This position requires a skilled professional who can independently manage complex building systems while working collaboratively with our Facilities team to maintain the highest standards of preventive maintenance and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in facilities engineering, building maintenance, or related field
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively

Nice To Haves

  • Trade school certification or associate degree in HVAC, electrical, or mechanical systems
  • Experience working in museums, historic properties, or cultural institutions
  • Boiler operator's license
  • Electrical license or certification
  • Experience with emergency generators and UPS systems

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot HVAC systems including chillers, boilers, air handlers, and controls
  • Monitor and maintain building automation systems (BAS) to ensure optimal environmental conditions for art preservation
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests and system failures
  • Conduct daily rounds and inspections of mechanical rooms and equipment
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of equipment operations and maintenance activities
  • Assist with the implementation of energy conservation initiatives
  • Support capital improvement projects and equipment upgrades
  • Work closely with Collections, Security, and other departments to minimize disruption during maintenance activities
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and building codes
  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and procedures
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
