About The Position

This part-time general assignment reporter will produce news stories for broadcast and online up to 20 hours per week. Part of this will include packaging a story each weekend and some evenings when coverage of events is warranted. Some weekday coverage of events, especially during major stories, would be appreciated, but there would be flexibility depending on the person’s other obligations. The reporting would involve remotely monitoring meetings that are streamed, packaging stories from KUAR’s news partners, as well as doing original reporting by conducting interviews or attending press conferences or events. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Requirements

  • Experience working with professional or campus media, such as a student newspaper, radio station, or TV program.
  • Experience with audio recording or editing tools (e.g., Audacity, Adobe Audition)

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with public radio
  • Knowledge of in-field audio recording equipment, studio equipment and digital editing software
  • Ability to post content to digital platforms, like websites and social media.

Responsibilities

  • Produce daily and enterprise newscast stories and feature-length reports to be broadcast on KUAR, write online versions for KUAR’s website
  • Work under tight deadlines to deliver news on all platforms while maintaining accuracy, ensuring quality, and following standards of NPR’s Ethics Handbook, the Public Media Code of Integrity and the AP Stylebook
  • Willing to work weekends, nights or holidays when coverage of a story is warranted. Able to generate original story ideas while also taking assignments. Willing to take guidance about the direction of a story and accept editing before a story is published or broadcast
  • Capable of covering news conferences, meetings and conducting interviews in-the-field, by phone or the web, capturing good quality audio and photos
  • Actively participates in KUAR’s social media feeds while adhering to best practices for public media journalists
  • Handle station equipment responsibly, letting management know when servicing or replacement is needed
  • Other duties as assigned
