About The Position

The External Communications Intern supports external communications activities and objectives. This position works closely with the Corporate Communications team to support the development of engaging and compelling content for various external communication channels, including social media, press releases, customer outreach, and other deliverables related to company strategic goals and issues. This position supports external communications for parent company California Water Service Group and Group’s subsidiaries – primarily in California but also in Hawaii, New Mexico, and Washington. The position reports to the Manager, External Communications in the Corporate Communications Department. This position is located in Selma, CA. Internship Requirements One‑year commitment from June 1, 2026, through May 28, 2027 Summer - full time (32-40 hours per week) Fall/Spring/Winter - based on school schedule 100% on-site, no remote option Eligibility for employment in the US is required without sponsorship (ex. OPT, F1, etc.)

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current enrollment, with at least two years completed, toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, public relations, or similar field and/or equivalent.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
  • Ability to handle confidential or otherwise sensitive information with discretion.
  • Experience creating engaging social media content and a keen interest in staying updated on the latest digital trends.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Able to plan, organize, prioritize, and multitask.
  • Valid California Driver License.
  • Eligibility for employment in the US is required without sponsorship (ex. OPT, F1, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of engaging and compelling content for multiple platforms, including external web properties, social media, and more.
  • Contribute to the management of our corporate social media accounts, including content creation, scheduling posts, and engaging with our online community.
  • Monitor and analyze media and social media coverage relevant to the company and industry trends. Summarize key findings for distribution to internal stakeholders.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of corporate events, including preparing materials and coordinating logistics.
  • Update media lists; track earned media, speaking engagements, and broadcast appearances; and assist in the creation of coverage reports tied to key events and project announcements.
  • Create content using Canva or the Adobe Creative Suite, including After Effects, Express, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Premiere Pro.
  • Organize existing assets so they can be managed efficiently and to ensure consistency in use of logo/branding—utilizing Adobe Bridge, standard naming and filing conventions, and other tools.
  • Work with internal managers, consultants, and other vendors to produce and execute projects with appropriate parties.
  • Author processes and workflows for asset creation and management, and identify areas for improvement.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as directed by Cal Water.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
