About The Position

The Elementary ESL Teacher provides high-quality English language instruction to multilingual learners in grades [1–5]. This role supports students in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while promoting academic achievement across content areas. The ESL Teacher collaborates closely with classroom teachers, families, and support staff to ensure students receive equitable access to grade-level curriculum. Reports To: The lead teacher will report to the principal of the campus assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education for K-5th grade positions.
  • DC teaching license/certification (or in process of obtaining reciprocity) strongly preferred.
  • One year of experience as a teacher of record minimum or as a Mundo Verde fellow.
  • Knowledge of WIDA standards and language acquisition strategies.
  • Strong commitment to supporting diversity, equity and inclusion and creating an anti-racist school environment
  • Models critical thinking and student centered practice with abilities in standards and data analysis to inform curricular planning for high impact results
  • Demonstrated ability to be an independent and collaborative solutions-oriented problem-solver
  • Commitment to demonstrate love and joy towards students, colleagues, and the work
  • Willing, hard-working attitude with a growth mindset toward self, students, and colleagues

  • Urban teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver targeted ESL instruction aligned to state standards and WIDA English Language Development Standards.
  • Develop and implement differentiated lesson plans that support language acquisition and academic growth.
  • Provide push-in and/or pull-out instructional services based on student needs.
  • Scaffold grade-level content to ensure accessibility for English learners.
  • Monitor and assess student progress using formal and informal data.
  • Administer language proficiency assessments (e.g., WIDA ACCESS).
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and required documentation.
  • Support compliance with federal, state, and district requirements for English learners.
  • Partner with classroom teachers to co-plan lessons and integrate language support.
  • Participate in IEP/504 meetings as needed for multilingual learners.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress.
  • Contribute to MTSS/RTI processes when applicable.
  • Foster an inclusive classroom environment that values students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Support a school culture that celebrates multilingualism and diversity.
  • Provide resources and strategies to staff to strengthen culturally responsive practices.
  • Collaborate with staff, students, and families to implement consistent structures and develop, celebrate and maintain traditions
  • Attend school events, such as family engagement events and celebrations of student learning, including those that occur outside of the instructional day
  • Attend a summer institute and weekly professional development
  • Support school safety by assisting with student arrival and dismissal procedures as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned
