About The Position

Performs responsible skilled mechanical work on a variety of automotive vehicles, and light and heavy equipment in the County. Conducts preventive maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of automotive vehicles, trailers, light and heavy equipment. Work includes the repair of gasoline and diesel engines, motors, brakes, electrical systems. Employee is also subject to hazards of automotive mechanics including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, dusts, mists, fumes, odors, and oil. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation while in progress and inspected upon completion.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of safety hazards and precautions related to the work.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, tools, parts and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Working knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, vacuum, and brake systems.
  • Skill in the use and the operations of tools, equipment and machinery used in automotive repair work.
  • Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts.
  • Ability to understand service manuals and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to operate vehicles safely.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records of work activities.

  • Graduation from High School supplemented by course work in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • This position is designated as an authorized Motor Vehicle Operator for Iredell County and requires adherence to the Iredell County Vehicle Operations Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Stock shelves.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles, small motors, trailers and heavy equipment.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as tune-ups, checking lights, tires, oil changes, brake linings, wiper blades, horns, suspensions, etc.
  • Operates equipment such as lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, welding units, hand tools, etc.
  • Lubricates, repairs and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts; installs air conditioning compressor, etc.
  • Changes, repairs and replaces tires; replaces and checks brakes, replaces hoses, etc.
  • Performs work on electrical, brake, and hydraulic systems.
  • Transport vehicles to and from different departments and businesses for repair needs.
  • Be able to communicate with other departments and businesses.
  • Use variety of vehicle scan tools.
  • Perform surplus duties of removing department related items and returning vehicles as close as possible to factory. Perform paperwork for surplus. Assist Surplus in needed help on departments surplus listings.
  • Performs work on surplus vehicles removing vinyl labels, cages, light bars, strobes, extra parts and wiring, etc.
  • Performs work to put factory parts back on vehicle
  • Operates equipment such as air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, and other hand tools.
  • Prepares simple records of work activities.
  • Clean Facility and Vehicles as needed
  • Performs related duties as required.
