About The Position

The Equipment Repair Specialist 2 perform a wide variety of mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, heavy equipment, heavy trucks, pumps and compressors. Master mechanics repair virtually any system on the vehicle or equipment.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Certification in five (5) Automobile or Heavy Truck Mechanic licensing areas; AND
  • Valid Driver's License; AND
  • At least two (2) years full-time paid experience in repair and maintenance of automobiles and heavy equipment (training at a certified technical school may be counted as experience);
  • NOTE: Equivalent part- time experience will be assessed and credited at the discretion of the Department of Personnel/Human Resources. CORRESPONDENCE COURSES OR HIGH SCHOOL TRAINING COURES MAY NOT BE USED AS PART OF THE TWO (2) YEARS EXPERIENCE.
  • Appointees within five (5) months of service must become certified as a Master Mechanic (State of Michigan and/or A.S.E. only). If the certification is not obtained, the employee will be removed from the Equipment Repair Specialist position pursuant to the Department of Personnel/Human Resources and Department of Public Services procedures. Persons employed in this position must maintain Master Mechanic certification for the duration of their employment.
  • A Physical Agility/Performance Assessment may be administered to Qualified candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Repair equipment (shop specific).
  • Diagnose equipment.
  • Place parts orders.
  • Maintain work area.
  • Maintain certifications.
  • Test drive vehicles.
  • Test components and systems using equipment such as engine analyzers, compression gauges and computerized diagnostic devices.
  • Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
  • Repair, reline, replace and adjust brakes.
  • Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings and other potentially troublesome areas.
  • Infrequently may involve conferring with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
