About The Position

Equipment Operator District One/District Maintenance/Bartow Operations Center This position will perform a variety of roadway maintenance activities on state roads throughout Polk County, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs, emergency response, etc. The Equipment Operator supports the safety and functionality of Florida’s transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to work independently; stand for an extended period of time.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. Possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must successfully obtain and maintain training, certification, a satisfactorily criminal background check and any additional requirements provided by the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT.)
  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
