Requirements

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • A valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • This position requires a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes, with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
