About The Position

This position will operate vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.  This position uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.  This position will be expected to perform independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skills in: Operating a variety of hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.

  • Ability to: maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures
  • Ability to: communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions

  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
  • A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities (optional duty). Oversees crews performing maintenance activities (optional duty if overseeing contracted employees).
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
