About The Position

This position will operate vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment while performing bridge and roadway maintenance. This position uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. This position will be expected to perform independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.

Requirements

Knowledge of: Mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures.
Skills in: Operating a variety of hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.

Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.

Responsibilities

Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities (optional duty). Oversees crews performing maintenance activities (optional duty if overseeing contracted employees).
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
