About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Highways and Aviation is looking for an Equipment Operator Journey 1/2 in FAIRBANKS to help us Keep Alaska Moving!   • A Class B Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at the time of hire. A conditional hire approval can be given to applicants that do not yet possess a Class A CDL. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain a Class A CDL within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain N-Tanker and Hazmat endorsements within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.
  • Please be aware - this position requires the applicant (at their expense) to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) in compliance with federal regulations pertaining to certain maritime port facilities. All terminal employees are required to obtain a TWIC in order to work in certain restricted areas of the terminals.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment for year-round maintenance tasks, including snow removal, hauling, drainage, and infrastructure repairs; perform pre- and post-trip inspections, fluid checks, cleaning, and minor maintenance.
  • Maintain and repair transportation assets such as roads, bridges, drainage structures, signage, guardrails, and landscaping; tasks may include painting, sandblasting, and concrete work, with potential summer travel.
  • Perform winter operations using plows, sanders, graders, and other equipment for snow and ice control, abrasive application, snow hauling, and response to road hazards, flooding, debris, and other emergencies.
  • Ensure work zone safety by setting up traffic control with arrow boards, flagging, and other methods during both winter and summer maintenance activities; respond to and clear material spills or obstructions.
  • Participate in training and development, including Traffic Control, First Aid/CPR, OSHA, and heavy equipment operation for snow and ice control; prepare for the WG 53 test and perform additional assigned duties, including shop support.
