About The Position

Operates and maintains revolving crawler or truck-mounted cranes or excavators or standard power shovels with digging attachments of ¾ cubic yard capacity or more as a primary, regular assignment in performing general construction and maintenance work; and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and four (4) years of work experience in the operation of equipment applicable to positions in this class or certification by a county trainer of the ability to satisfactorily operate equipment applicable to positions in this class.
  • Applicants will be required to demonstrate such competency by satisfactorily passing a performance examination.
  • Applicants must be certified by the county trainer on the following equipment or have four (4) years of work experience in the operation of: Truck-Tractor-Trailer and Excavator with digging attachments of 3/4 cubic yard capacity or more.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type A) and a current State of Hawaii DOT examination certificate.
  • Applicants will be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
  • The examination will consist of a qualifying performance evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Operates revolving crawler or truck-mounted cranes or excavators with dragline or clamshell bucket attachments or with standard or long reach booms and dipper sticks with digging buckets or pullshovel attachments of ¾ cubic yard capacity or more
  • Excavates and backfills foundations or ditches
  • Dredges and reclaims land
  • Cleans debris from ditches and streams
  • Trims road banks and grades roads
  • Scoops, loads, and unloads dirt, sand, gravel, rock, and other materials
  • Lifts and set pipes, timber and boulders into trenches or other locations with a hook attachment
  • May equip crane with guideway and drop hammer for use as a pile driver
  • Performs rigging of necessary attachments or may supervise the work of a helper doing same
  • Instructs helpers and others in use of equipment for training purposes
  • Keeps equipment supplied with fuel, oil, water, and air
  • Lubricates gears and other moving parts
  • Maintains and makes repairs to power and lifting unites
  • May occasionally operate other types of motorized equipment representative of this class and/or lower classes as required
  • Performs other related duties as required
