About The Position

The City of Staunton’s Public Works Department is seeking applicants for Equipment Operator II to join its Utilities Division. Position performs routine and difficult skilled maintenance and construction work for installing and repairing water and sewer lines and appurtenances. Position performs recurring preventative maintenance (RPM) activities on water and sewer lines and appurtenances. Position operates and maintains heavy, medium, and light duty equipment as required in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer lines and appurtenances. Ability to use hand tools and perform manual labor in all weather conditions at all times of day required. Knowledge of municipal utility system maintenance, repair, and construction; applicable job-related hazards, health, regulatory, and environmental laws and ability to perform manual labor; maintain, adjust, and repair equipment; understand verbal and written directions; and utilize computer (software and hardware) in executing required work and maintaining and updating data and records for system maintenance and operation. Position requires occasional standby schedule.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate all equipment including but not limited to dump truck, backhoe, sewer jet, vacuum/jet truck, valve maintenance trailer, vacuum excavation trailer, camera truck, and boom truck.
  • Knowledge of municipal utility system maintenance, repair, and construction; applicable job-related hazards, health, regulatory, and environmental laws and ability to perform manual labor
  • Ability to understand verbal and written directions
  • Class A CDL w/ tanker endorsement (+) with good driving record required. Candidates without CDL and/or tanker endorsement may be hired at lower pay grade conditional upon securing required licenses within 6 months of hire.
