About The Position

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I PAY GROUP: 7 City of Seguin Pay Schedules SUMMARY OF POSITION : Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing skilled work operating light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of drainage, streets, brush collection, brush chipping and mowing of City Right of Ways. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff. (Operates light equipment to accomplish assigned activities; may include driving trucks.) EXAMPLES OF WORK : Essential Duties The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Operates light equipment such as a tractor, mower, chainsaw, weed eater, shredder, chipper, leaf compactor, or truck as required and instructed; Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicle is in proper working condition; Assists with set-up of work zone barricades and signs for traffic control Provides assistance with and suggestions for increased safety during assigned projects; Maintains city right of ways and other city properties; Loads, transports, and unloads necessary materials for assigned projects; May performs light plumbing, maintenance, construction, and/or carpentry duties; Observes all safety rules and procedures; Other Important Duties Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: the safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle code relating to operation of light and heavy motorized equipment; and suffi­cient skills to operate this equipment effectively and safely.
  • Physical Ability to: lift and maneuver up to 85 pounds (i.e. construction materials, pipe, bags of concrete, etc.); climb and maintain balance on ladder; ascend and descend up to 30” high steps numerous times per day; do repetitive bending and kneeling; and perform strenuous work in the outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to: read and under­stand construction and utility diagrams; service and make minor repairs on equip­ment and to know safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow written and oral instructions; work effectively and cooperatively with other employees; and maintain Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record.
  • Other: may be required to have ability to read and follow construction and utility diagrams.
  • High school graduation, or its equivalent, and at least one year of experience operating light equipment; or sufficient education to read and write, plus at least two years of experience operating light equipment; or any equivalent combination of experi­ence and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Class “A or B” Commercial Driver's License is required within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities
